Ever been asked how you can be good as a secular person? We have values! Though my religious days seemed guided by clear dogmatic instruction, in reality, questioning contradictions and recognizing my values nudged me out of religion entirely. The capacity for reason is at the heart of our values, and it helps us weigh them when they seem to compete in our daily lives. Free of dogma, let’s take a clear-eyed look at how we can tilt toward the good.

Marilee Harrison retired from a career as a psychotherapist specializing in trauma and abuse issues, after receiving a B.A. in Psychology from Wichita State University and Master of Social Work degree from the University of Kansas. Once a religious fundamentalist, she emerged from her roots in a Mennonite community to become a secular community organizer. She founded and coordinated secular, reason-based organizations at the local and state level, and served in national leadership positions. Maintaining an abiding commitment to social justice, she was at the forefront of marriage equality, officiating hundreds of weddings as a Humanist Celebrant. She aspires to cultivate a bountiful garden, enduring friendships, and abundant laughter in the process.
