In this discussion, we will cover common misconceptions of tribal nations and how modern visibility affects communities. We will touch on topics like media stereotypes, treaty rights, citizenship, and how “harmless” claims of native heritage can endanger legal sovereignty.

About the speaker:
Sam ᏩᏛᏚᎦ Phillips is an enrolled member of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma and descendant of the Anisahoni, or Blue, clan. Sam is a Two-Spirit, queer, indigenous activist, and Cherokee Nation Foundation scholar with a focus on Legal Studies as it applies to American Indian Sovereignty, Health, and Current Issues; Sam is striving to obtain a law degree with the intent of working in the office of the Attorney General of Cherokee Nation upon completion. Sam is currently working for the Cherokee Nation Tribal Government, in Health Administration, to perpetuate their culture and build a stronger, healthier nation.
