Featured speaker: Michelle Norris, “Corey’s Network”

In July 2013, Corey Daniel Laykovich, who was just 22 years old, fell victim to an attack that occurred within three blocks of his residence. After the tragic loss of Corey, his family was shocked to discover that their precinct did not assign victim advocates to the surviving victims of homicide until a suspect was charged. This particularly surprised Corey’s mother, a social worker with over 25 years of experience. As a result, after extensive research, Corey’s family and friends established “Corey’s Network, Inc… a Foundation for Hope” (CNI). Officially founded on June 1, 2014, CNI now boasts a diverse team of professionals, each personally committed to the program’s success.

Michelle R. Norris has dedicated 35 years to the fields of social work and education. Her extensive experience includes working with abused and battered women, adjudicated youth, nontraditional students in post-secondary education, and urban core youth. She holds a master’s degree in organizational development psychology, which, combined with her background in social services, equips her with a unique skill set for developing a robust board of directors for a nonprofit program. Additionally, her MA in management focuses on fundraising.

Michelle’s accolades include the 2017 Woman of Distinction Award, the House of Representatives “Glory of Missouri” award, and the Kindest Kansas Citian award. She is also a published author and an active member of the National Association of Professional Women, the National Professional Honor Society, and Nonprofit Connect.
