SUMMARY:KC Oasis Volunteers at Micah Ministry
DESCRIPTION:  \nAt Kansas City Oasis our values are “People are more important than beliefs\,” “human hands solve human problems\,” and “meaning comes from making a difference.” In that spirit\, we partner with Micah Ministry to help feed and clothe those in need. \nThe Micah Ministry is a charitable organization that seeks to help anyone\, regardless of race\, gender\, religious (or nonreligious) affiliation\, sex\, sexual orientation\, or any other trait – as long as they could use some help\, the Micah Ministry is there to help them. \nThe Micah Ministry operates in a way that’s a bit different from traditional support organizations. They feed those who seek their services with a restaurant-style waiting operation: Volunteers take drink and food orders and deliver the food to them\, providing seconds if needed and continuing to refill their drinks as needed. \nIn addition to food\, if there are enough volunteers\, they operate a clothing and household items (toiletries\, candles\, blankets\, and other items) store. Volunteers ask each person for their order\, go back into the store room\, and retrieve the requested items as long as they are in stock. \nThe Micah Ministry is a religious organization\, which means that the event is started by an optional group prayer at the beginning. \nWe have never been pressured to pray with them and they have always been glad to have us participate in their group. \nPictures are permitted to be taken prior to the admission of those in need\, but\, once people are being admitted into the dining area\, no pictures are allowed. \nBy participating in this event\, you agree to abide by the Oasis Code of Conduct (https://www.kcoasis.org/about-oasis/code-of-conduct/).

SUMMARY:Marilee Harrison\, "On Breathing and Walking at the Same Time"
DESCRIPTION:Doors open at 10:30 am for coffee and conversation.\nSunday Gathering begins at 11 a.m.\nChildcare is provided. Everyone is welcome!\nProgram ends at 12:30 p.m. \nFeatured Speaker: Marilee Harrison\, “On Breathing and Walking at the Same Time”\nCommunity Moment: John Mueter\nMusical Guest: JT Eberhard \n“Reality is known through reason.” That’s one of our core Oasis values. How do we continue forward movement with a measure of reason when faced with distressing circumstances in which emotion tends to rule the day (or the year\, or the nation)? When it’s easier to ignore or seek distractions from important issues? Maintaining balance and self-care are key skills for activism at all levels. We’ll consider reality-based ways to maintain sustainable forward momentum. \nMarilee Harrison is the KC Oasis Executive Director. She retired from a career as a psychotherapist specializing in trauma and abuse issues\, after receiving a B.A. in Psychology from Wichita State University and Master of Social Work from the University of Kansas. Once a religious fundamentalist\, she emerged from her roots in a Mennonite community to become a secular community organizer. She founded and coordinated secular\, reason-based organizations at the local and state level\, and served in national leadership positions. Maintaining an abiding commitment to social justice\, she was at the forefront of marriage equality\, officiating hundreds of weddings as a Humanist Celebrant. She aspires to cultivate a bountiful garden\, enduring friendships\, and abundant laughter in the process. \n*By participating in this event\, you agree to abide by the Oasis Code of Conduct (https://www.kcoasis.org/about-oasis/code-of-conduct/)

SUMMARY:Sunday gathering: Cheryl Kulp\, "A Conversation About Special Education"
DESCRIPTION:Doors open at 10:30 am for coffee and conversation.\nSunday Gathering begins at 11 a.m.\nChildcare is provided. Everyone is welcome!\nProgram ends at 12:30 p.m.Featured Speaker: Cheryl Kulp\nCommunity Moment: Melody Petet\nMusical Guest: JJ Cantrell \n\n\nSchool can be challenging enough for kids\, and any additional challenges can all but put an education out of reach. With a good education being a key factor to success as an adult\, getting the most out of school is increasingly more and more important. Parents who know about the options\, resources\, and processes will be better advocates for their child and make school more enjoyable for everyone. \nCheryl A. Kulp has over 40 years of experience in education and has taught elementary\, secondary\, and college-level students. She has been a regular classroom teacher\, a curriculum support specialist and a consulting teacher. Raised on a farm in central Kansas\, she earned her Bachelor of Secondary Education from Fort Hays State and started teaching at Salina High School. Her experience with special education began in 1975 as the parent of a special needs child\, which led her to get her Bachelor of Elementary Education and Master of Special Education from Washburn University and eventually to study Special Education Administration at Kansas State University. She finally allowed her teacher’s certificate to expire after her third retirement from Topeka 501 as a consulting teacher. \n*By participating in this event\, you agree to abide by the Oasis Code of Conduct (https://www.kcoasis.org/about-oasis/code-of-conduct/)

SUMMARY:Sunday Gathering: Melanie Phillips\, "Adventures in Nana-Sitting"
DESCRIPTION:Doors open at 10:30 am for coffee and conversation.\nSunday Gathering begins at 11 a.m.\nChildcare is provided. Everyone is welcome!\nProgram ends at 12:30 p.m. \nFeatured Speaker: Melanie Phillips\, “Adventures in Nana-Sitting”\nCommunity Moment: Mikayla Dreyer\nMusical Guest: Joe Schoonover \nMany of us will find ourselves in the position of being a caretaker for an elderly family member. At some point\, we will all be planning for end-of-life care and arrangements for family or ourselves. In 2015\, Melanie and her sister\, Kristin\, took on a new role: Caretakers for Grandma. Their grandmother was ready (not of her own choosing) to transition from an independent living community in Maryland to an assisted living/skilled nursing facility. They discussed the idea of how “cool” it would be to have Grandma move out here and proposed the idea to their mom and aunt. Thus\, the “Adventures in Nana-Sitting” began. \nAbout the speaker:\nMelanie was born and raised in Northeastern Ohio. She earned her B.S. in Hearing and Speech Sciences from Ohio University\, her M.A. in Audiology from Kent State University and her Doctorate of Audiology (Au.D.) from University of Florida. She has spent her 20-year career caring for the hearing-impaired population in South Carolina\, Kansas and Missouri. She has been a member of the Northland Professionals in Aging\, an instructor for community education programs and a guest speaker at conferences\, civic organization meetings and senior living residential facilities. She volunteered in the KC Oasis leadership role of child care coordinator for 2½ years. Every day\, Melanie works with her patients and their families to improve their communication strategies and quality of life. Melanie lives with her son and three furbabies in Liberty\, Missouri. She loves to travel\, spend time with her loved ones and sing karaoke. She is a collector of Pez. \n*By participating in this event\, you agree to abide by the Oasis Code of Conduct (https://www.kcoasis.org/about-oasis/code-of-conduct/)

SUMMARY:Sunday Gathering: Carrah Q\, "Owning Beauty"
DESCRIPTION:Doors open at 10:30 am for coffee and conversation.\nSunday Gathering begins at 11 a.m.\nChildcare is provided. Everyone is welcome!\nProgram ends at 12:30 p.m. \nFeatured Speaker: Carrah Q\, “Owning Beauty”\nCommunity Moment: Ann Anderson\nMusical Guest: FIRE DOG\nhttps://www.facebook.com/firedogstl/ \nWhat is the relationship between beauty and power? The more a woman claims her own autonomy and develops her sense of self away from notions of marriage\, home and family\, the more her sense of her own beauty become a part of her empowerment rather than a superficial decoration or distraction. History has shown this. Conversations in kitchens and bathrooms have proven this. The Powder Room is an innocent name for the many revolutions it spawned. Hairspray and lipstick have taken on a more significant meaning in the third wave of feminism. This talk is about the new glow\, this deep “Bronzing Age” of female empowerment\, in the beauty department. Cosmetics and conversation might just change the world. Pucker up. \nCarrah Quigley is a spiritual humanist\, National speaker and emerging thought leader. She has studied the world’s religions for 19 years and has BA in religious studies from University of Arizona. Originally from Tucson\, Arizona\, she traveled the world beginning at age 9 and built a special relationship with Ireland\, where she received an MPhil in ecumenics\, with distinction\, from Trinity College Dublin. She lectures nationally on a wide range of topics from religion and spirituality to American culture\, feminism\, storytelling\, earth-centered living and the future of Humanism. She is honored to speak at the Parliament of World Religions in Toronto in November 2018. \n*By participating in this event\, you agree to abide by the Oasis Code of Conduct (https://www.kcoasis.org/about-oasis/code-of-conduct/)

SUMMARY:Sunday Gathering: Two Atheists Go to Sunday School
DESCRIPTION:Doors open at 10:30 am for coffee and conversation.\nSunday Gathering begins at 11 a.m.\nChildcare is provided. Everyone is welcome!\nProgram ends at 12:30 p.m. \nFeatured Speakers: Rex Burks and Owen Younger\, “Did you hear the one about the two atheists who went to Sunday School?”\nCommunity Moment: Melanie Phillips\nMusical Guest: Mark Lowrey and Friends\nhttp://www.jukeboxxmedia.com/portfolio/mark-lowrey/ \nRex Burks and Owen Younger were both raised as devout fundamentalist Christians until reason and evidence eventually took over. Since leaving religion\, they have both become enthusiastic students of the New Testament\, the historical Jesus\, and the early Christian church. For more than two years\, Bible in hand\, they have been visiting a wide range of Christian denominations and joining Sunday school class discussions with believers. \nThey love to share their fascinating and sometimes humorous stories about the astonishing variety of belief among Christians\, and learn how an understanding and appreciation of this diversity can help make us all more effective advocates for freethought. SPOILER: Episcopalians and Pentecostals are not the same! \nOwen and Rex also frequently share their insights on effective ways to relate to different types of Christians and highlight the most common objections to nonbelief they’ve repeatedly heard. \nProfessionally\, Owen is a pilot and aviation consultant; Rex is an attorney. Both are longtime residents of the Dallas\, Texas\, area. \n*By participating in this event\, you agree to abide by the Oasis Code of Conduct (https://www.kcoasis.org/about-oasis/code-of-conduct/)

DESCRIPTION:Doors open at 10:30 am for coffee and conversation.\nSunday Gathering begins at 11 a.m.\nChildcare is provided. Everyone is welcome!\nProgram ends at 12:30 p.m.Featured Speaker: Lynne Thomson\nCommunity Moment: TBD\nMusical Guest: John Svoboda http://svobodaguitar.com/\n\n\nLynne is the oldest of 4 brothers and sister\, all of whom were born on a farm in Alden\, Iowa. The oldest of six\, she has always been a care-giver and decided to pursue a nursing degree. After graduating cum laude from the Augustana School of Nursing in Sioux Falls South Dakota\, she accepted her first job with Driscoll Children’s Hospital in Corpus Christi\, Texas. Why Corpus Christi? One\,  they would let her work in the neonatal intensive care unit immediately and\, two\, any place was better than Sioux Falls in the winter. Lynne joined Saint Luke’s Hospital in 1985 where she was active in numerous professional committees and worked in the NICU. She also helped set up Saint Luke’s new single family rooms at Saint Luke’s East. SUMMARY:KC Oasis Volunteers at Micah Ministry
DESCRIPTION:At Kansas City Oasis our values are “People are more important than beliefs\,” “human hands solve human problems\,” and “meaning comes from making a difference.” In that spirit\, we partner with Micah Ministry to help feed and clothe those in need.

SUMMARY:Sunday Gathering: Marilee Harrison\, "When Values Collide\, Everyday Ethics"
DESCRIPTION:Doors open at 10:30 am for coffee and conversation.\nSunday Gathering begins at 11 a.m.\nChild care is provided. Everyone is welcome!\nProgram ends at 12:30 p.m. \nFeatured Speaker: Marilee Harrison\nCommunity Moment: Julie Whistman\nMusical Guest: JJ Cantrell \n\n\nEver been asked how you can be good as a secular person? We have values! Though my religious days seemed guided by clear dogmatic instruction\, in reality\, questioning contradictions and recognizing my values nudged me out of religion entirely. The capacity for reason is at the heart of our values\, and it helps us weigh them when they seem to compete in our daily lives. Free of dogma\, let’s take a clear-eyed look at how we can tilt toward the good. \nMarilee Harrison retired from a career as a psychotherapist specializing in trauma and abuse issues\, after receiving a B.A. in Psychology from Wichita State University and Master of Social Work degree from the University of Kansas. \n*By participating in this event\, you agree to abide by the Oasis Code of Conduct (https://www.kcoasis.org/about-oasis/code-of-conduct/).
