SUMMARY:KC Oasis Volunteers at Micah Ministry
DESCRIPTION:At Kansas City Oasis our values are “People are more important than beliefs\,” “human hands solve human problems\,” and “meaning comes from making a difference.” In that spirit\, we partner with Micah Ministry to help feed and clothe those in need. \nThe Micah Ministry is a charitable organization that seeks to help anyone\, regardless of race\, gender\, religious (or nonreligious) affiliation\, sex\, sexual orientation\, or any other trait – as long as they could use some help\, the Micah Ministry is there to help them. \nThe Micah Ministry operates in a way that’s a bit different from traditional support organizations. They feed those who seek their services with a restaurant-style waiting operation: Volunteers take drink and food orders and deliver the food to them\, providing seconds if needed and continuing to refill their drinks as needed. \nIn addition to food\, if there are enough volunteers\, they operate a clothing and household items (toiletries\, candles\, blankets\, and other items) store. Volunteers ask each person for their order\, go back into the store room\, and retrieve the requested items as long as they are in stock. \nThe Micah Ministry is a religious organization\, which means that the event is started by an optional group prayer at the beginning. \nWe have never been pressured to pray with them and they have always been glad to have us participate in their group. \nPictures are permitted to be taken prior to the admission of those in need\, but\, once people are being admitted into the dining area\, no pictures are allowed. \nBy participating in this event\, you agree to abide by the Oasis Code of Conduct (https://www.kcoasis.org/about-oasis/code-of-conduct/).

SUMMARY:Sunday Gathering: E. Andrew Boyd\, "Beyond Comprehension: A Scientific Look"
DESCRIPTION:Doors open at 10:30 am for coffee and conversation.\nSunday Gathering begins at 11 a.m.\nChildcare is provided. Everyone is welcome!\nProgram ends at 12:30 p.m. \nFeatured Speaker: E. Andrew Boyd\,\n“Beyond Comprehension: A Scientific Look at the Challenge of Knowing Everything”\nCommunity Moment: Daniel Harris\nMusical Guest: JJ Cantrell \n“It is of great use to the sailor to know the length of his line\, though he cannot with it fathom all the depths of the ocean.”\nJohn Locke\, An Essay Concerning Human Understanding \nLocke was keenly aware the human mind wasn’t up to the task of knowing everything. But if so\, what are we missing? Drawing upon material from a recent book\, we investigate our cognitive limitations by taking a look at some underappreciated scientific conundrums; things that simply can’t be\, but are. We conclude by reflecting on what these limitations mean in our daily lives. \nDr. E. Andrew (Andy) Boyd is a scheduled contributor to the Engines of Our Ingenuity\, a nationally syndicated radio program and podcast produced by Houston’s National Public Radio affiliate\, KUHF\, part of Houston Public Media. Evan Hadingham\, Senior Science Editor at NOVA\, has called Engines “the best-written short-form science podcast on the internet\,” adding\, “Every episode is a gem.” Dr. Boyd received his B.A. with honors at Oberlin College with majors in mathematics and economics and his Ph.D. in operations research from MIT. He was elected an INFORMS Fellow in 2007 and was a co-recipient of the INFORMS Impact Prize in 2016. His most recent book is Beyond Comprehension: A Scientific Look at the Challenge of Knowing Everything. \n*By participating in this event\, you agree to abide by the Oasis Code of Conduct (https://www.kcoasis.org/about-oasis/code-of-conduct/)

SUMMARY:Sunday Gathering: Twyla Dell\, "Can a City Change Its Fuel Habits?"
DESCRIPTION:Doors open at 10:30 am for coffee and conversation.\nSunday Gathering begins at 11 a.m.\nChildcare is provided. Everyone is welcome!\nProgram ends at 12:30 p.m. \nFeatured Speaker: Twyla Dell\, “Can a City Change Its Fuel Habits?”\nCommunity Moment: Erin Schinasi\nMusical Guest: Mickey P. \nPioneers to the river bend who would become Kansas Citians said goodbye to wood and hello to both coal and oil over one lifetime. Each fuel left its stamp on the city. Then gasoline created the sprawling metro area we have today. Now we find ourselves in a dysfunctional relationship with gasoline. In the last decade city government has reduced its dependence on this fuel\, but we can and must do so much more. \n“The Once and Future Kansas City: A Love Story of Wood\, Coal and Gasoline” brings this thriving city history to life through the lens of the fuels that built it and challenges us to change our habits once again. \nTwyla Dell\, Ph.D.\, has been an environmental educator for many years.

SUMMARY:Sunday Gathering: Deb Vacek\, "Hiking the Appalachian Trail"
DESCRIPTION:Doors open at 10:30 am for coffee and conversation.\nSunday Gathering begins at 11 a.m.\nChildcare is provided. Everyone is welcome!\nProgram ends at 12:30 p.m. \nFeatured Speaker: Deb Vacek\, “Hiking the Appalachian Trail”\nCommunity Moment: Joshua Stuart\nMusical Guest: Rick Kloog \nDeb Vacek grew up in Omaha\, Nebraska\, and settled in Kansas City in 1984\, after earning her BFA. In 1986\, she started working at the Metropolitan Community Colleges district office\, where she worked for 26 years\, earning her master’s degree from Kansas State while simultaneously jumping the IT wave of the 1990s. She ended her career with the Web Applications Development and Design team in her early 50s. \nUpon retirement from MCC\, Deb worked briefly as an application designer for a small IT company. Soon after the company disbanded\, she heard an interview with Cheryl Strayed\, author of Wild\, while driving one afternoon. She pulled her car into a parking lot and sat mesmerized by Strayed’s journey. Since childhood\, Deb’s own call for adventure had only been expressed in brief outings. Retirement afforded Deb the personal time and space for a multimonth hike\, but now the only excuse for not heeding the call for adventure was the stigma of age and gender – a 50-plus woman out in the woods alone. \nIn this presentation\, Deb will discuss how the deaths of two friends and her aunt gave her strength to move past her fears and complete a thru-hike of the 1\,289.5-mile Appalachian Trail in 2017. Her talk will include trail lessons\, Tramily (trail family)\, hardships and wonder. Deb will bring her packed backpack for exploration for anyone interested. \n*By participating in this event\, you agree to abide by the Oasis Code of Conduct (https://www.kcoasis.org/about-oasis/code-of-conduct/). \n

Graduating in 2011 with a Master of Divinity\, as an ordained pastor she has now found her ministry among the poor and marginalized at the Micah Ministry. \nShe and her husband of 56 years\, Darrell\, have three grown children\, three spouses/partners\, 10 grandchildren\, and eight great-grandchildren. \n*By participating in this event\, you agree to abide by the Oasis Code of Conduct (https://www.kcoasis.org/about-oasis/code-of-conduct/).\n\nSee Less
