SUMMARY:KC Oasis Volunteers at Micah Ministry
DESCRIPTION:At Kansas City Oasis our values are “People are more important than beliefs\,” “human hands solve human problems\,” and “meaning comes from making a difference.” In that spirit\, we partner with Micah Ministry to help feed and clothe those in need. \nThe Micah Ministry is a charitable organization that seeks to help anyone\, regardless of race\, gender\, religious (or nonreligious) affiliation\, sex\, sexual orientation\, or any other trait – as long as they could use some help\, the Micah Ministry is there to help them. \nThe Micah Ministry operates in a way that’s a bit different from traditional support organizations. They feed those who seek their services with a restaurant-style waiting operation: Volunteers take drink and food orders and deliver the food to them\, providing seconds if needed and continuing to refill their drinks as needed. \nIn addition to food\, if there are enough volunteers\, they operate a clothing and household items (toiletries\, candles\, blankets\, and other items) store. Volunteers ask each person for their order\, go back into the store room\, and retrieve the requested items as long as they are in stock. \nThe Micah Ministry is a religious organization\, which means that the event is started by an optional group prayer at the beginning. \nWe have never been pressured to pray with them and they have always been glad to have us participate in their group. \nPictures are permitted to be taken prior to the admission of those in need\, but\, once people are being admitted into the dining area\, no pictures are allowed. \nBy participating in this event\, you agree to abide by the Oasis Code of Conduct (https://www.kcoasis.org/about-oasis/code-of-conduct/).

This presentation endeavors to briefly explain the asylum process to help participants understand the alleged “crisis” at our southern border. It will focus on the legal path to asylum in the United States and debunking the myths and lies prevalent in the media. \nNote: Due to the terrible situations asylum seekers are fleeing\, this presentation may include mention of violence\, domestic violence and sexual assault. None of these situations will be described in detail. \nKelly Hewitt is a fierce advocate for immigrants. Before becoming a lawyer\, Kelly was a social worker in Kansas City\, advancing the rights of crime victims. SUMMARY:Twyla Dell\, Ph.D.\, "The Once and Future Kansas City"
DESCRIPTION:Featured Speaker: Twyla Dell\,\nCommunity Moment: TBA\nMusical Guest: Coleen Dieker \nStories from our town make up a fabric of daring adventures and daunting work. Pioneers to the river bend built the town with wood in the 1820s. The next generation built the city with coal in the 1880s. The automobile came to Kansas City at the turn of the 20th century and gasoline helped it stretch out of city streets and create suburbs in the 1920s. The entire 20th century was about giving gasoline its head\, so to speak\, while we enjoyed its many gifts. Now the future has arrived. Shall we continue to adore gasoline or face the hard choices of alternative energy and communication? \nTwyla’s new book\, “Fueling Change: The Once and Future Kansas City\,” will be available for a special price of $20. \nDoors open at 10:30 am for coffee and conversation.\nSunday Gathering begins at 11 a.m.\nChildcare is provided. DESCRIPTION:We will be grilling out and partying with the veterans at St. Michael’s\, and we could use some help to make it a fun day for everyone. This will be a ‘family picnic’ kind of event\, so feel free to bring your chairs\, blankets\, soccer balls and children. \nKansas City Atheist Coalition will be providing the grilled meats\, buns and drinks for the veterans and volunteers\, we are expecting 150 people total. We will need games to play\, side dishes\, desserts and people to play the games. \nPlease use this link to Sign Up Genius to note how you will participate: \nhttps://www.signupgenius.com/go/60b0b48aca92ba6ff2-veterans1 \nThe afternoon is planned as setting up at 10:00am\, games at 11:00am\, food served from 12:00-1:00pm\, and clean up from 1:00-2:00pm. \nWe hope for an outdoor picnic\, but in case of inclement weather\, there is indoor space available. \n
