SUMMARY:KC Oasis Sunday Gathering – Featured speaker: John "JR" Bruce\, "Buffalo Soldier Stories"
DESCRIPTION:Musical guest: Kemet Coleman (https://www.kemetcoleman.com/)\nFeatured speaker: John “JR” Bruce\, “Buffalo Soldier Stories” \nJohn “JR” Bruce is president of the KC Buffalo Soldiers Chapter and earned four Bronze Stars for Valor in Combat in Vietnam. He is a Certified Oral Storyteller. \nAbout Buffalo Soldiers: One of the greatest and most successful human experiments in American history had its seminal roots in Missouri. Starting in 1866\, Jefferson Barracks\, Missouri\, was the receiving station for the men (and woman) of color following the Civil War. There the most unlikely of soldiers joined the United States Army in the United States Colored Troops (USCT) by the name of Cathay Williams\, aka Pvt. William Cathay\, the only known female to serve in what became known as the Buffalo Soldiers. Pvt. Isaac Johnson\, the great grandfather of one of the presenters enlisted on May 6\, 1866\, and joined his company at Jefferson Barracks\, Missouri. An original Buffalo Soldier\, he traveled across Missouri by rail to the Western Frontier to serve with honor in the 38th and 24th Infantry\, and later reenlisted into the famed 9th Cavalry. His story is the basis of “Slave to Soldier.” \nParallel park in the neighborhood near our building or in the “free on Sundays” KU P2 parking garage two blocks west of our community center. SUMMARY:KC Oasis Sunday Gathering – Featured speaker: Mx. Niki Aktipis\, "What’s in Your Pantry?: Destigmatizing Period Poverty"
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: We are holding a donation drive in conjunction with this event. Please bring period products to donate if you are able. \nPeriod poverty is a critical issue affecting individuals globally\, especially those from low-income backgrounds. It refers to the lack of access to sanitary products\, menstrual hygiene education and proper sanitation facilities\, which hinders the ability of menstruating individuals to manage their periods with dignity and comfort. This leads to significant challenges in health\, education and overall well-being. In many places\, stigma surrounding menstruation exacerbates the problem\, further marginalizing those affected. Addressing period poverty requires systemic changes including policy interventions\, affordable access to menstrual products\, and comprehensive education to normalize discussions around menstruation and promote equality. \nHow do you destigmatize periods and support communities? In the last four years of teaching\, Niki has taken on the challenge of addressing period poverty within their high school and addressing period inequities. In this presentation\, they will discuss what period poverty is\, its intersectionality with period equity\, how to unravel period poverty within low-income public schools\, and how to support communities that face these challenges. \nWant to support Wyandotte High School’s period pantry? Here is their wishlist: https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/2YV8YM5WWW1X?ref_=wl_share \nAn Ohio native\, Niki has been a Kansas City\, Kansas\, resident since late 2017. Prior to landing in the great city split between two states\, Niki received their BSc in biopsychology from The University of Michigan (2013) and their MSc in conservation biology from the University of Derby (2015). As a conservationist\, their work has taken them all over the world and across the USA. Highlights include their work with leatherback sea turtles in Costa Rica and desert tortoise monitoring in the Mojave Desert. In 2022\, Niki completed their two-year commitment to Teach for America in conjunction with obtaining their MSE in secondary education from Fort Hays State University. In January 2024\, they started their third master’s degree in public health at the University of Kansas\, with plans to complete in fall 2026. Niki strongly believes that to be a scientist also means to be an educator. They are going into their fifth year as a proud high school life science teacher endorsed in teaching English language learners. Their current work project is expanding KCKPS’s only forensic science program over the next two school years. This will open up access to students in the field of crime scene science. In their first year of teaching\, Niki saw a gap in services for students who experience periods and decided to do something about it. They founded the school’s first period pantry\, which now services 20+ classrooms across Wyandotte High School. Since then\, they have also helped their students found the Skittles Student Union – a student union dedicated to fostering community among LGBTQ+ students and alumni. Niki calls Kansas City\, Kansas\, home with their mini urban zoo. \nBy participating in this event\, you agree to abide by the Oasis Code of Conduct (http://www.kcoasis.org/about-oasis/code-of-conduct/).

SUMMARY:KC Oasis Book Club: The Kite Runner
DESCRIPTION:Join the KC Oasis Book Club to discuss Khaled Hosseini’s bestseller\, “The Kite Runner.” \nThe #1 New York Times bestselling novel beloved by millions of readers the world over. “A vivid and engaging story that reminds us how long his people [of Afghanistan] have been struggling to triumph over the forces of violence — forces that continue to threaten them even today.” \nThe unforgettable\, heartbreaking story of the unlikely friendship between a wealthy boy and the son of his father’s servant\, caught in the tragic sweep of history\, The Kite Runner transports readers to Afghanistan at a tense and crucial moment of change and destruction. A powerful story of friendship\, it is also about the power of reading\, the price of betrayal\, and the possibility of redemption; and an exploration of the power of fathers over sons — their love\, their sacrifices\, their lies. \nBy participating in this event\, you agree to abide by the Oasis Code of Conduct (http://www.kcoasis.org/about-oasis/code-of-conduct/).

SUMMARY:KC Oasis Sunday Gathering – Featured speaker: Matthew Rich\, "My Current State of Ignorance"
DESCRIPTION:Matthew Rich\, “My Current State of Ignorance” \nIn an early workshop version of his upcoming full special\, My Current State of Ignorance\, Matthew Rich invites audiences on a deeply personal and uproarious journey through his religious deconstruction\, mental health struggles\, and profound self-discovery. Blending introspective humor with playful silliness\, Matthew explores whether there’s anything from his religious upbringing that can be carried forward into this new chapter of his life. This candid and hilarious performance offers a raw preview of his evolving story\, from a boy who was once an heir to the kingdom of heaven to a neurodivergent man just trying to get through life without responding “you too” to a waiter’s “enjoy your food.” \nMatthew Rich\, a Kansas City-based comedian\, blends reflective storytelling and absurd silliness to craft his unique comedic style. Having performed alongside Derek Waters\, Michael Longfellow\, and Caleb Hearon\, he also produces the Strange Nights showcase at Strange Days Brewing Co. A featured performer at The Fountain City Comedy Festival who starred in Ben Folds’ music video for “Exhausting Lover\,” Matthew has also collaborated on projects with Elite Daily\, showcasing his versatile and engaging humor. He absolutely did not use chatGBT to write this bio. – written by ChatGBT \nBy participating in this event\, you agree to abide by the Oasis Code of Conduct (http://www.kcoasis.org/about-oasis/code-of-conduct/).

SUMMARY:KC Oasis Book Club: "The Night Circus"
DESCRIPTION:Join the KC Oasis Book Club to discuss the New York Times bestseller\, “The Night Circus.” \nTwo star-crossed magicians engage in a deadly game of cunning in the spellbinding novel that captured the world’s imagination. “Part love story\, part fable … defies both genres and expectations.” —The Boston Globe \nThe circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there\, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called Le Cirque des Rêves\, and it is only open at night. But behind the scenes\, a fierce competition is underway: a duel between two young magicians\, Celia and Marco\, who have been trained since childhood expressly for this purpose by their mercurial instructors. Unbeknownst to them both\, this is a game in which only one can be left standing. Despite the high stakes\, Celia and Marco soon tumble headfirst into love\, setting off a domino effect of dangerous consequences\, and leaving the lives of everyone\, from the performers to the patrons\, hanging in the balance. \nVote for a location in the Book Club group: https://fb.me/g/42fx1jdTr/KBwpybhx?. Location will be announced October 6. \nLocation: Angela’s House (contact for address) \nBy participating in this event\, you agree to abide by the Oasis Code of Conduct (http://www.kcoasis.org/about-oasis/code-of-conduct/).

SUMMARY:KC Oasis Sunday Gathering: "Manipulating the People: Nazi Propaganda and the Importance of Media Literacy"
DESCRIPTION:Musical guest: David Luther (https://thedavidluther.com/)\nFeatured speakers: Jessica Rockhold and Dr. Shelly Cline\, “Manipulating the People: Nazi Propaganda and the Importance of Media Literacy” \nPerhaps the biggest misconception about Nazi Germany is that the Nazi party came to power in a landslide victory with an overwhelming wave of public support. This talk will look at the conditions of Germany in the 1920s and 1930s that made the Nazism possible. It will explore the propaganda used by the Nazis to gain and sustain the support of the people for their new vision of Germany\, and it will explore important lessons for media literacy today. \nJessica Rockhold began her career at MCHE in 2003 following a year as the research assistant to the senior historian at the United States Memorial Museum. She spent 17 years running MCHE’s education programs and was the director of education before being named MCHE’s executive director in January 2020. \nDr. Shelly Cline joined the MCHE team in 2015 and is the historian and director of education. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Kansas. She is an instructor in the Jewish Studies Program at the University of Kansas and has also served on the faculties of the Kansas City Art Institute and the University of Missouri Kansas City. \nBy participating in this event\, you agree to abide by the Oasis Code of Conduct (http://www.kcoasis.org/about-oasis/code-of-conduct/).
