SUMMARY:KC Oasis Sunday Gathering – Featured speaker: Kelly G. Loeb\, "Loeb on Brain Lobes – A Conversation About Alzheimer's Disease"
DESCRIPTION:Musical guest: Lezlie Revelle Zucker (https://www.facebook.com/LezlieRevelleZucker)\nCommunity moment: Jason R.\nFeatured speaker: Kelly G. Loeb\, “Loeb on Brain Lobes – A Conversation About Alzheimer’s Disease” \nKelly G. Loeb is the Community Engagement Coordinator for the KU Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center\, where she provides education\, resources and support (in English and Spanish) for people with Alzheimer’s disease\, their families\, professional caregivers and healthcare providers\, and the general public. Kelly’s master’s degree in social work from the University of Kansas and her bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Missouri mean that Kelly loves both sides of that state line\, but she will always call Los Angeles\, California\, home. A member of the Community Leaders Board for the Alzheimer’s Association – Heart of America Chapter\, Kelly also facilitates a support group (which she created in 2002\, focusing on Black families in Kansas City’s urban core) for caregivers of people with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. Additionally\, Kelly is a 2022 alumna of the inaugural cohort of the American Society on Aging’s RISE fellowship for Black\, Indigenous and other People of Color who are leaders in the field of aging. \nSince 2011\, Kelly G. has also been a SHIP (state health insurance assistance program) counselor and educator\, guiding Medicare beneficiaries impartially in choosing and using health insurance options that give them the most cost-effective\, comprehensive and convenient coverage. She thrives on ensuring beneficiaries’ and their communities’ use and understanding of their healthcare systems. Enthusiastic\, educational and effective describe Kelly’s public speaking style\, and she enjoys sharing her professional expertise and personal panache with audiences of any size. One favorite speaking engagement was Kelly’s message to eager Kansas Citians after she was chosen as Ms. JuneteenthKC 2021 in recognition of her community service and care. Kelly works toward a world with health equity\, in which we all have affordable\, comprehensive\, compassionate and quality health care and Alzheimer’s disease is just a memory. \nLocation: UMKC Royall Hall 111\n800 E. 52nd St.\, Kansas City\, MO 64110\nFree Sunday parking in the parking garage at 52nd and Rockhill Rd. SUMMARY:KC Oasis Volunteers at Scraps KC

SUMMARY:KC Oasis Sunday Gathering – Featured speaker: Author Jen Mann: "Anyone Else Falling Apart\, Or Is It Just Me? (Midlife Malaise)
DESCRIPTION:Musical guests: The Nite Owls – Wyatt and Sarah (https://www.facebook.com/theniteowlsws)\nCommunity moment: Sara Conrad\nFeatured speaker: Author Jen Mann: “Anyone Else Falling Apart\, Or Is It Just Me? (Midlife Malaise) \nJen Mann had what appeared to have the perfect life: a successful career as a bestselling author and award-winning blogger\, a devoted husband\, teenage kids who weren’t total jerks\, and a badass minivan. So imagine her surprise when\, at age 47\, a midlife crisis kicked her straight in the ladybits. She wrote a raw and vulnerable blog post in the middle of the night and started a movement to create a new space where middle-aged women can share openly and honestly with one another. \nJen Mann is best known for her wildly popular and hysterical blog People I Want to Punch in the Throat. She has been described by many as Erma Bombeck―with f-bombs. Jen is known for her hilarious rants and funny observations on everything from parenting to gift giving to celebrity behavior to politics to Elves on Shelves. She does not suffer fools lightly. Jen is the author of the New York Times bestseller People I Want to Punch in the Throat: Competitive Crafters\, Drop-Off Despots\, and Other Suburban Scourges\, which was a Finalist for a Goodreads Choice Award. Her latest book is Midlife Bites: Anyone Else Falling Apart\, Or Is It Just Me?\, which was a Nominee for a Goodreads Choice Award. She is also the mastermind behind the New York Times bestselling I Just Want to Pee Alone series. Jen is a married mother of two children whom she calls Gomer and Adolpha in her writings―she swears their real names are actually worse. \nLocation: UMKC Royall Hall 111\n800 E 52nd St\, Kansas City\, MO 64110\nFree Sunday parking in the parking garage at 52nd and Rockhill Rd. SUMMARY:KC Oasis Sunday Gathering – Featured speaker: Niki Aktipis\, "Intersectionality: Science and Its Historical Impact on Black Bodies"
DESCRIPTION:Musical guest: Wyatt West (https://www.facebook.com/wyattwestmusic)\nCommunity moment: TBA\nFeatured speaker: Niki Aktipis\, “Intersectionality: Science and Its Historical Impact on Black Bodies” \nHave you ever heard the name Henrietta Lacks? Do you know what happened in the Tuskegee Syphilis Experiment? Were you ever taught about how gynecological practices were created? Why does any of this matter? \nIn this presentation we will discuss the implications of scientific discoveries and their impact on Black bodies. Many of the medical scientific breakthroughs that have saved countless lives have a dark history rooted in inequality and\, in some areas\, unequivocally inhumane. Within the U.S. education system\, most of this history is completely absent from science curriculums or has been whitewashed at best. We will take time to review some of these stories and the cultural implications of hiding this history from ourselves. \nAbout Niki:\nMx. Niki M Aktipis\, MSc\, MSE (They/Them/Theirs) \nAn Ohio native\, Niki has been a Kansas City\, Kansas\, resident since late 2017. Prior to landing in the great city split between two states\, Niki received their BSc in Biopsychology from The University of Michigan (2013) and their MSc in Conservation Biology from the University of Derby (2015). As a conservationist\, their work has taken them all over the world and across the USA. Highlights include their work with leatherback sea turtles in Costa Rica and desert tortoise monitoring in the Mojave desert. In 2022\, Niki completed their two-year commitment to Teach for America along with their MSE in Secondary Education from Fort Hays State University. They strongly believe that to be a scientist also means to be an educator. They are currently a proud life science teacher for Wyandotte High School. Niki calls Kansas home with their mini urban zoo. \nLocation: UMKC Royall Hall 111\n800 E 52nd St.\, Kansas City\, MO 64110\nFree Sunday parking in the parking garage at 52nd and Rockhill Rd.
