SUMMARY:Barbara (Janie) Williams\, "Be My Valentine\, Madalyn"
DESCRIPTION:Doors open at 10:30 am for coffee and conversation.\nSunday Gathering begins at 11 a.m.\nChildcare is provided. Everyone is welcome!\nProgram ends at 12:30 p.m. \nFeatured Speaker: Barbara (Janie) Williams\, “Be My Valentine\, Madalyn: a Love Letter to Atheist Women”\nMusical Guest: TBA\nCommunity Moment: TBA \nJanie was raised Sylvania\, Ohio\, a suburb of Toledo. She realized early on that she was born on the wrong side of the tracks. She believed in space aliens in second grade\, thanks to the National Enquirer. She was convinced that the aliens had enough space to land their spacecraft in her backyard. She learned that you can save the lives of TV characters by shouting\, “Hey! Look behind you! Run!” (Her granny did that for years\, saving Julie Olson Williams of “Days of Our Lives” many\, many times.) \nJanie lived in Tampa\, Florida\, for five years\, where she learned to despise a lot of ’80s music. She also had her beautiful and wise daughter while living in Tampa. She eventually moved back to Toledo\, where she founded “Great Lakes Atheists” and had a convention in 2013. She ran away to Kansas City to meet up with a special someone #nevertoolateforhappiness. She is the current vice chair of Equality Kansas of Metro KC and grandmother of two bunnies and a gecko. \n*By participating in this event\, you agree to abide by the Oasis Code of Conduct (https://www.kcoasis.org/about-oasis/code-of-conduct/).

SUMMARY:Featured Speaker: R Minor: Seeking Government Support for Your Religion Act of Unbelief?
DESCRIPTION:When religious people turn to government to enforce their religious beliefs or to fund their charities\, this looks like a lack of belief that their god can really do it even if they claim that their god is in charge of the universe. \nA national resource for information on gender issues and gay/straight relationships for organizations\, businesses\, educational institutions\, and media outlets such as NBC and USA Today\, Robert N. Minor\, Ph.D. has been speaking\, consulting\, and leading workshops for 20 years. \nHe is Professor Emeritus of Religious Studies at the University of Kansas\, where he taught for 33 years and was the chair of the Religious Studies Department for six. A native of Milwaukee\, Wisconsin\, he received the Ph.D. in Religion from the University of Iowa in 1975 and an M.A. in Biblical Studies from Trinity International University in Chicago. \nDr. Minor is the author of eight books. His newest book\, When Religion is an Addiction\, was published by HumanityWorks! in St. Louis. Previously he wrote Gay and Healthy in a Sick Society: The Minor Details\, published by HumanityWorks! in November 2003\, which was a finalist for the Independent Publisher Book Award\, and was named in national reviews as one of the best gay books of 2003. His Scared Straight: Why It’s So Hard to Accept Gay People and Why It’s So Hard to Be Human\, also published by HumanityWorks!\, was named a finalist for both a Lambda Literary Award and the Independent Publisher Book Award. SUMMARY:KC Oasis Volunteers at Micah Ministry
DESCRIPTION:At Kansas City Oasis our values are “People are more important than beliefs\,” “human hands solve human problems\,” and “meaning comes from making a difference.” In that spirit\, we partner with Micah Ministry to help feed and clothe those in need. \nThe Micah Ministry is a charitable organization that seeks to help anyone\, regardless of race\, gender\, religious (or nonreligious) affiliation\, sex\, sexual orientation\, or any other trait – as long as they could use some help\, the Micah Ministry is there to help them. \nThe Micah Ministry operates in a way that’s a bit different from traditional support organizations. They feed those who seek their services with a restaurant-style waiting operation: Volunteers take drink and food orders and deliver the food to them\, providing seconds if needed and continuing to refill their drinks as needed. \nIn addition to food\, if there are enough volunteers\, they operate a clothing and household items (toiletries\, candles\, blankets\, and other items) store. Volunteers ask each person for their order\, go back into the store room\, and retrieve the requested items as long as they are in stock. \nThe Micah Ministry is a religious organization\, which means that the event is started by an optional group prayer at the beginning. \nWe have never been pressured to pray with them and they have always been glad to have us participate in their group. \nPictures are permitted to be taken prior to the admission of those in need\, but\, once people are being admitted into the dining area\, no pictures are allowed. \nBy participating in this event\, you agree to abide by the Oasis Code of Conduct (https://www.kcoasis.org/about-oasis/code-of-conduct/).
