SUMMARY:KC Oasis partners with Micah Ministry - Living our Values
DESCRIPTION:At Kansas City Oasis our values are “People are more important than beliefs”\, “human hands solve human problems”\, and “meaning comes from making a difference”. In that spirit\, we partner with Micah Ministry to help feed and clothe those in need. \nThe Micah Ministry is a charitable organization that seeks to help anyone\, regardless of race\, gender\, religious (or non-religious) affiliation\, sex\, sexual orientation\, or any other trait – as long as they could use some help\, the Micah Ministry is there to help them. \nThe Micah Ministry operates in a way that’s a bit different from traditional support organizations. They feed those who seek their services with a restaurant-style waiting operation: volunteers take drink and food orders and deliver the food to them\, providing seconds if needed and continuing to refill their drinks as needed. \nIn addition to food\, if there are enough volunteers\, they operate a clothing and household items (toiletries\, candles\, blankets\, and other items) store. Volunteers ask each person for their order\, go back into the store room\, and retrieve the requested items as long as they are in stock. \nThe Micah Ministry is a religious organization\, which means that the event is started by an optional group prayer at the beginning. \nIn our past volunteer experiences with them\, we have never been pressured to pray with them and they have always been glad to have us participate in their group. \nPictures are permitted to be taken prior to the admission of those in need\, but\, once people are being admitted into the dining area\, no pictures are allowed. \nBy participating in this event\, you agree to abide by the Oasis Code of Conduct (https://www.kcoasis.org/about-oasis/code-of-conduct/).

SUMMARY:Sunday Gathering: James & Michelle Morgan\, "Mobility Matters"
DESCRIPTION:Doors open at 10:30 am for coffee and conversation.\nSunday Gathering begins at 11 a.m.\nChild care is provided. Everyone is welcome!\nProgram ends at 12:30 p.m. \nFeatured Speakers: James & Michelle Morgan\, “Mobility Matters: How Spare Change Can Bring About Great Change”\nCommunity Moment: Nate Brame\nMusical Guest: Pablo Sanhueza & the Subtropicals \nJames and Michelle Morgan\, active participants at KC Oasis\, are excited to announce the launch of the “Mobility Matters” international humanitarian project in Nicaragua\, in cooperation with Metanoia Ministries and the Free Wheelchair Mission. Being poor in the developing world is hard. Being poor and disabled in the developing world is a nightmare. Most disabled people in the poorest places live their lives in a dark room. Without wheelchairs\, the handicapped must be carried everywhere or are forced to crawl. Their families are forced to make impossible decisions\, to go out and find work to provide food and other basic needs\, or to stay home and care for the needs of their loved one. It is heartbreaking. But a free wheelchair can dramatically change the lives of the disabled and their entire family. Because human hands solve human problems and meaning comes from making a difference\, James and Michelle will share the why\, where\, when and how of Mobility Matters. \n*By participating in this event\, you agree to abide by the Oasis Code of Conduct (https://www.kcoasis.org/about-oasis/code-of-conduct/).

SUMMARY:Sunday Gathering: Twyla Dell\, PhD\, We Are Our Mothers' Daughters
DESCRIPTION:Doors open at 10:30 am for coffee and conversation.\nSunday Gathering begins at 11 a.m.\nChild care is provided. Everyone is welcome!\nProgram ends at 12:30 p.m. \nFeatured Speaker: Twyla Dell\, PhD\, “We Are Our Mothers’ Daughters”\nMusical Guest: Julian Davis \nBetween Hilary Clinton’s July 29 nomination speech that ended with “I am my mother’s daughter and my daughter’s mother” and October 6 (a little over two months)\, Twyla Dell organized eight of her friends and their friends to write their mothers’ stories and publish them in the volume\, “We Are Our Mothers’ Daughters\, 9 Women Who Made a Difference.” It was their effort to promote Hillary Clinton’s run for the White House as the first woman president. Among their many self-discoveries in this process was the realization that to really know yourself\, you need to write your mother’s story. Five of the authors are local and will give excerpts of their mothers’ stories and their realizations about themselves. Twyla Dell wrote her own mother’s valiant story of running from state to state away from an abusive husband and father to protect her children’s very lives. Now freshly returned from the Women’s March on Washington\, she will share stories of that journey as well. A second volume of “We Are Our Mothers’ Daughters” is accepting mother stories for a Mother’s Day 2017 volume. \n*By participating in this event\, you agree to abide by the Oasis Code of Conduct (https://www.kcoasis.org/about-oasis/code-of-conduct/).

SUMMARY:Sunday Gathering: Gretta Vosper\, West Hill United-Toronto Oasis
DESCRIPTION:Doors open at 10:30 am for coffee and conversation.\nSunday Gathering begins at 11 a.m.\nChild care is provided. Everyone is welcome!\nProgram ends at 12:30 p.m. \nFeatured Speaker: Gretta Vosper\, West Hill United-Toronto\nCommunity Moment: Mike Aus\nMusical Guest: JJ Cantrell \nGretta Vosper has served West Hill United\, a congregation of The United Church of Canada located in Scarborough\, Ontario\, for nearly two decades. With the leadership of the congregation\, she has transitioned West Hill beyond doctrine and created a theologically barrier-free community known around the world for its groundbreaking work. West Hill is featured in the documentary Godless and the upcoming film Losing Our Religion\, by Zoot Media.\nIn an act of solidarity with secular Bangladeshi bloggers identified as atheists\, arrested and threatened with execution\, Gretta identified as an atheist in 2013. Recently\, the United Church has initiated a review of Gretta’s effectiveness as a minister based on her atheistic beliefs. A hearing of her beliefs took place in June 2016; Gretta was found to be “Unsuitable for ministry in the UCC” and has been recommended for dismissal. \nGretta is the author of the national bestseller With or Without God: Why the Way We Live is More Important that What We Believe\, and Amen: What Prayer Can Mean in a World Beyond Belief\, an exploration of prayer stripped of supernatural expectations. Additionally\, she has published three collections of poetry and continues to write new lyrics to traditional hymns. Nonexclusive inspirational liturgical and music resources prepared for use at West Hill – where those who hold traditional beliefs share the pews with others who don’t – are used internationally. \nGretta serves on the board of The Oasis Network\, a growing network of secular communities. In the past she has served as a director and officer of The Clergy Project\, an international network for clergy who no longer believe\, and founded the Canadian Centre for Progressive Christianity. Gretta also serves as a vice-chair of the Board of Governors of Centennial College. \nYou can learn more about her at www.grettavosper.ca. \n*By participating in this event\, you agree to abide by the Oasis Code of Conduct (https://www.kcoasis.org/about-oasis/code-of-conduct/).

SUMMARY:KC Oasis Volunteers at Micah Ministry
DESCRIPTION:Join KC Oasis as we help feed and clothe those in need at Micah Ministry!

SUMMARY:Sunday Gathering: Pete Machik Potts\, "Mindfulness"
DESCRIPTION:Doors open at 10:30 am for coffee and conversation.\nSunday Gathering begins at 11 a.m.\nChild care is provided. Everyone is welcome!\nProgram ends at 12:30 p.m. \nFeatured Speaker: Pete Machik Potts\, “Mindfulness”\nCommunity Moment: Taylor Gibbons\nMusical Guest: Scott Stuewe \nAbout our featured speaker:\nPete Machik Potts is a meditation teacher and ordained minister of Bodhisattva Buddhism. She is a member of a thriving sangha at Temple Buddhist Center in Kansas City (located on the Plaza) and is on the board of directors of Inner Peace Buddhist Center.\n\nAfter a 20+ year career in marketing and advertising and moving from SoCal back home to the Midwest\, she felt used up\, worn out and frustrated\, seeking something … more. Struggling with chronic fear and anxiety\, she approached Buddhism in desperation\, and came to establish an enthusiastic study and practice that relieved her own suffering a great deal. \nUpon taking her refuge\, and later her Bodhisattva vows\, Pete was given the Dharma name of Machik\, after Machig Labdron\, the first female Buddhist lineage holder in Tibet. Among other things this 11th century teacher said: “Go to the places that scare you. Help those you think you cannot help.” It’s something the 21st century Machik aspires to do. \nSo nowadays\, Pete does social work\, specifically as grief support for SIDS Resources\, Inc.\, helping families experiencing infant loss. She has also trained in chaplaincy at KU Med\, with certification through the College of Pastoral Education and Psychotherapy\, an experience\, which she says\, was life-impacting. Pete is also involved with TBC’s Prison Dharma Project\, leading meditations and discussions for Buddhist prisoners in Kansas and Missouri prisons and jails. She’s also a Banneker Buddy\, reading and writing with the adorable kindergarten students at Banneker Elementary since 2012 (she highly recommends!). \nPete and her husband Jeff live in Lenexa with their dachshund\, Willard. Why a wiener dog? Because she wanted to get a long little doggie. \n*By participating in this event\, you agree to abide by the Oasis Code of Conduct (https://www.kcoasis.org/about-oasis/code-of-conduct/).

SUMMARY:Sunday Gathering: Flying Fish: To Dumb too be Discouraged
DESCRIPTION:Doors open at 10:30 am for coffee and conversation.\nSunday Gathering begins at 11 a.m.\nChild care is provided. Everyone is welcome!\nProgram ends at 12:30 p.m. \nFeatured Speaker: Cam F. Awesome\, “Flying Fish: To Dumb too be Discouraged”\nCommunity Moment: Ryan King\nMusical Guest: The Pharaohs \nDescription: I believe in setting a goal too big to accomplish the first try. Fail. Fail again. Fail until you’re expected to fail. At some point you will fail at failing by succeeding. It takes an ignorance of your situation to not be discouraged. The flying fish spends every second of every minute of every hour of every day failing at flying. But it doesn’t get discouraged and stop trying. Although it has failed 100% of attempts\, its name is “flying fish” and it is the best fish that flies by just trying. My life is very similar to this. I describe this with boxing\, stand-up comedy\, and my speaking career. \nAbout the speaker:\nCam Awesome is a boxer\, stand-up comedian and keynote speaker. While only 28\, Cam believes age is a general estimate of life experience. Cam has lived a life that has provided valuable life lessons. His strong message resonates with youth\, due to the perceived value of a personality with a large social media following. \nCam has been featured in several print and digital media\, including ESPN\, SportsNation\, Highly Questionable\, Washington Post\, The Rolling Stone\, Bleacher Report\, and countless others. \n*By participating in this event\, you agree to abide by the Oasis Code of Conduct (https://www.kcoasis.org/about-oasis/code-of-conduct/).
