SUMMARY:Sunday Gathering: Ron Ruhnke\, "The Perils\, Pitfalls & Possibilities of Community"
DESCRIPTION:Doors open at 10:30 am for coffee and conversation.\nSunday Gathering begins at 11 a.m.\nChildcare is provided. Everyone is welcome!\nProgram ends at 12:30 p.m. \nFeatured Speaker: Ron Ruhnke\, “The Perils\, Pitfalls and Possibilities of Community”\nMusical Guest: Ryan Head\nCommunity Moment: Nate Bailey \nIndividuality vs. community. Self vs. other(s). Selfishness vs. altruism. Self-reliance vs. interdependence. These are dualities that we live with daily\, and balancing them in our lives is often a challenge. We live in a culture and historical period\, at least in the West\, that promote a hyperindividualism. Yet we are coming more and more to realize the need for community. This is the second of a two-part presentation. \nRon received his B.S.E. from Emporia State University\, and his Ph.D. in counseling psychology from The University of Texas at Austin. He also studied at the University of Oklahoma\, the United States International University in San Diego\, and the University of Freiburg in Freiburg\, Germany. He taught high school in Salina\, Kansas\, worked at a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center in Lincoln\, Nebraska\, and was employed for 27 years as a psychologist and therapist at Family Guidance Center in St. Joseph\, Missouri. He is currently retired. \n*By participating in this event\, you agree to abide by the Oasis Code of Conduct (https://www.kcoasis.org/about-oasis/code-of-conduct/).

SUMMARY:Sunday Gathering: Kelly Hewitt\, Immigration Law and Asylum
DESCRIPTION:Doors open at 10:30 am for coffee and conversation.\nSunday Gathering begins at 11 a.m.\nChildcare is provided. Everyone is welcome!\nProgram ends at 12:30 p.m. \nFeatured Speaker: Kelly Hewitt\,\nImmigration Law and Asylum: Demystifying the Asylum Process\nMusical Guest: Mark Lowrey\nCommunity Moment: TBA \nAsylum law is so complex\, an entire semester of law school could be spent on it. This presentation endeavors to briefly explain the asylum process to help participants understand the alleged “crisis” at our southern border. It will focus on the legal path to asylum in the United States and debunking the myths and lies prevalent in the media. \nNote: Due to the terrible situations asylum seekers are fleeing\, this presentation may include mention of violence\, domestic violence and sexual assault. None of these situations will be described in detail. \nKelly Hewitt is a fierce advocate for immigrants. Before becoming a lawyer\, Kelly was a social worker in Kansas City\, advancing the rights of crime victims. Now as an attorney Kelly uses that same passion for social justice to zealously pursue her clients’ rights in Immigration Court\, before the USCIS and on appeal. Kelly is a fluent Spanish speaker. \n*By participating in this event\, you agree to abide by the Oasis Code of Conduct (https://www.kcoasis.org/about-oasis/code-of-conduct/). \n  \n

SUMMARY:Twyla Dell\, Ph.D.\, "The Once and Future Kansas City"
DESCRIPTION:Featured Speaker: Twyla Dell\,\nCommunity Moment: TBA\nMusical Guest: Coleen Dieker \nStories from our town make up a fabric of daring adventures and daunting work. Pioneers to the river bend built the town with wood in the 1820s. The next generation built the city with coal in the 1880s. The automobile came to Kansas City at the turn of the 20th century and gasoline helped it stretch out of city streets and create suburbs in the 1920s. The entire 20th century was about giving gasoline its head\, so to speak\, while we enjoyed its many gifts. Now the future has arrived. Shall we continue to adore gasoline or face the hard choices of alternative energy and communication? \nTwyla’s new book\, “Fueling Change: The Once and Future Kansas City\,” will be available for a special price of $20. \nDoors open at 10:30 am for coffee and conversation.\nSunday Gathering begins at 11 a.m.\nChildcare is provided.
