SUMMARY:KC Oasis Volunteers at Micah Ministry
DESCRIPTION:MASKS ARE OPTIONAL. \n*Note: It’s okay if you can’t get there until 5:15-5:30. \nAt Kansas City Oasis our values are “People are more important than beliefs\,” “human hands solve human problems\,” and “meaning comes from making a difference.” In that spirit\, we partner with Micah Ministry to help feed and clothe those in need. \nMicah Ministry serves hundreds of people every Monday evening from 5:15-7:15. They help anyone\, regardless of race\, gender\, religious (or nonreligious) affiliation\, sex\, sexual orientation\, or any other trait. Come join us in helping our less fortunate neighbors. \nVolunteers will greet the guests\, serve food\, offer beverages\, fill clothing requests and help with litter control. If there are enough volunteers\, there may be the option to sort clothing.\nThe Micah Ministry is a religious organization\, which means that the event is started by an optional group prayer at the beginning. We have never been pressured to pray with them and they have always been glad to have us participate in their group. \nDue to COVID\, masks are required\, and the event is currently being held outside instead of in the dining hall. \nPlease meet in the parking lot behind the church\, where we will get our volunteer assignments. \nBy participating in this event\, you agree to abide by the Oasis Code of Conduct (http://www.kcoasis.org/about-oasis/code-of-conduct/).

SUMMARY:"Seth Andrews vs. God: Who Is the Better Intelligent Designer?"
DESCRIPTION:Musical guest: JJ Cantrell\nFeatured speaker: Seth Andrews\, “Seth Andrews VS. God: Who is the Better Intelligent Designer?” \nReligious apologists often get misty and reverent about the “obvious” design in nature\, yet Seth Andrews thinks God did a pretty shoddy job. Join us for an entertaining\, often funny and sometimes alarming examination of the world’s faulty wiring … and how Seth might have done better than whoever – or whatever – allegedly wrote the blueprints. \nSeth Andrews is a former evangelical and Christian broadcaster who now hosts The Thinking Atheist … one of the most popular podcasts and online atheist communities in the world. The Thinking Atheist is not a person. It is an icon encouraging all to reject faith and pursue reason and evidence. \nSeth has authored five books\, including his latest offering\, “Christianity Made Me Talk Like an Idiot.” He also hosts a second podcast\, “True Stories with Seth Andrews.” \nWith a mix of humor and heart\, Seth has spoken for audiences large and small in the U.S.\, Canada\, Europe and Australia about his former faith\, the promotion of science and skepticism\, the importance of Humanism in this often crazy world\, and why we should all pursue a personal relationship with reality. \nBy participating in this event\, you agree to abide by the Oasis Code of Conduct (http://www.kcoasis.org/about-oasis/code-of-conduct/).

SUMMARY:KC Oasis Sunday Gathering – Featured speaker: DeAnn Gregory\, "LED Lighting – The Good\, The Bad and The Ugly"
DESCRIPTION:Musical guest: Jansen Wooton (https://www.instagram.com/jansendoesmusic/)\nCommunity moment: Jacob Mitchell\nFeatured speaker: DeAnn Gregory\, “LED Lighting – The Good\, The Bad and The Ugly” \nDeAnn is a Missouri Master Naturalist and longtime conservationist\, currently serving on the DarkSky Missouri board. In 2020\, while serving on a Thomas Hart Benton Sierra Club Committee\, she researched environmental and societal impacts of overlighting in anticipation of Kansas City’s (then future) planned transition to LED streetlights. A Sierra Club subcommittee robustly advocated for environmental considerations\, influencing the final outcome. (Residents in Tucson and other cities that chose environmentally responsible lighting said\, “Even the people look better.”) Light pollution is currently a robust area of scientific research worldwide\, across many fields of study. A brief synopsis can be found in the 2023 Artificial Light at Night State of the Science report (zenodo.org/records/8071915). DeAnn will describe the causes of light pollution\, ecological impacts\, and current projects of DarkSky Missouri to raise awareness. DeAnn is retired from Missouri Department of Natural Resources and resides in Kansas City with her husband\, two dogs and five chickens. \nParallel park in the neighborhood near our building or in the “free on Sundays” KU P2 parking garage two blocks west of our community center.
