Everyone is welcome!\nProgram ends at 12:30 p.m. \nFeatured Speaker: Summer Osborne\, “Mindful Revolution”\nCommunity Moment: Brian Bergstrom\nMusical Guest: Summer Osborne \nThings are changing. One of two things will happen: People will either walk mindfully with it\, or be dragged. If we want to tip the scales in favor of life itself … if we want to propel the momentum TOWARD love\, we have to understand that we don’t have to agree on all the details in order to be moving in the same direction. It’s not exclusive to any belief\, but inclusive of the ALL of it. \nAbout the speaker: Summer Osborne is an award-winning American singer-songwriter\, artist activist and spiritual teacher from Vandalia\, Illinois. She entertains audiences throughout the U.S. and Canada with her magical brand of melodic and lyrically potent genre-jumping performances. \n“This is Your Call” (As I Am\, 2013) earned her a nomination from the International Music and Entertainment Awards for Best Spiritual Song and won a RightOutTV Music and Video award for Best Song with a Social Message. \nSummer has performed at numerous churches\, gatherings and spiritual centers that embody new thought\, including Christian\, Atheist\, Pagan\, Unity\, Unitarian Universalist\, and more\, throughout the Midwest and Northwest U.S. She also headlines festivals throughout North America\, including Pagan Festivals and Pride Fests. \nSummer’s music masterfully amalgamates the human condition\, spirituality\, truth\, love and healing. That is why people everywhere want what she has to give: Love. \n*By participating in this event\, you agree to abide by the Oasis Code of Conduct (https://www.kcoasis.org/about-oasis/code-of-conduct/).

Griffin\, the author of Racism in Kansas City: A Short History\, will speak on the origins of the book and troubling current trends in white thought in KC and elsewhere. \nHis book is a study of Kansas City’s darkest moments – slavery\, the border war\, the Civil War\, bombings of black homes\, lynchings\, the segregation of neighborhoods and schools\, the civil rights struggle\, the Black Panther movement\, the 1968 race riot\, assassinations in the 1970s\, the infamous Missouri v. Jenkins U.S. Supreme Court case\, and the racial inequities that still plague Kansas City today. Threaded throughout Racism in Kansas City are stories of those who fought ardently against racist policies – and won. \nThe book’s foreword was written by Alvin Brooks. \nCopies will be available for sale and signing at the event. SUMMARY:Sunday Gathering: Carrah Q\, "The Humanist Spectrum"
DESCRIPTION:Doors open at 10:30 am for coffee and conversation.\nSunday Gathering begins at 11 a.m.\nChild care is provided. Everyone is welcome!\nProgram ends at 12:30 p.m. \nFeatured Speaker: Carrah Q\, “The Humanist Spectrum”\nCommunity Moment: Jaime Jaramillo\nMusical Guest: TBD\nCelebrating Harvey Milk Day in the kids’ room with quotes and rainbow flags \nAfter 15 years of fumbling through conversations about religion and spirituality\, I have arrived\, confidently\, at a definition of personal belief I can live with: Spiritual Humanism. As a seminary dropout\, I spent years being resentful of narrow-minded leadership in religious communities. I experienced\, and still experience\, the eye-rolls\, snickering and the quick dismissal at my “spiritual but not religious\,” stance; as if I should tire of my youthful “dabbling\,” and finally settle on one religion\, just to make everyone else more comfortable. I experience the same behavior in some secular communities because of a pervading belief that I should just “give it all up.” My truth tends to make people on all sides suddenly eager for a chance at “justifiable” discrimination and name-calling. What happens when you give up religion but don’t give up belief? And what happens when you shun doctrine and still find value in theology? Is personal interpretation worthy? How exactly does one carve a path? And where exactly do I fit in? Welcome to the Humanist Spectrum! \nAbout the speaker: Carrah Q is a Spiritual trainer\, yoga teacher\, lipstick aficionado\, meditation instructor and religious educator. She holds a master’s degree\, with distinction\, in philosophy/ecumenics from Trinity College Dublin\, Ireland\, and a BA in religious studies from University of Arizona. \n*By participating in this event\, you agree to abide by the Oasis Code of Conduct (https://www.kcoasis.org/about-oasis/code-of-conduct/).

SUMMARY:KC Oasis Volunteers at Micah Ministry
DESCRIPTION:At Kansas City Oasis our values are “People are more important than beliefs”\, “human hands solve human problems”\, and “meaning comes from making a difference”. In that spirit\, we partner with Micah Ministry to help feed and clothe those in need. \nThe Micah Ministry is a charitable organization that seeks to help anyone\, regardless of race\, gender\, religious (or non-religious) affiliation\, sex\, sexual orientation\, or any other trait – as long as they could use some help\, the Micah Ministry is there to help them. \nThe Micah Ministry operates in a way that’s a bit different from traditional support organizations. They feed those who seek their services with a restaurant-style waiting operation: volunteers take drink and food orders and deliver the food to them\, providing seconds if needed and continuing to refill their drinks as needed. \nIn addition to food\, if there are enough volunteers\, they operate a clothing and household items (toiletries\, candles\, blankets\, and other items) store. Volunteers ask each person for their order\, go back into the store room\, and retrieve the requested items as long as they are in stock. \nThe Micah Ministry is a religious organization\, which means that the event is started by an optional group prayer at the beginning. \nIn our past volunteer experiences with them\, we have never been pressured to pray with them and they have always been glad to have us participate in their group. \nPictures are permitted to be taken prior to the admission of those in need\, but\, once people are being admitted into the dining area\, no pictures are allowed. \nBy participating in this event\, you agree to abide by the Oasis Code of Conduct (https://www.kcoasis.org/about-oasis/code-of-conduct/).

SUMMARY:Sunday Gathering: Gretta Vosper\, West Hill United-Toronto\, "Mind the Gap: Bridging the Space Between Religion and Secularism"
DESCRIPTION:Doors open at 10:30 am for coffee and conversation.\nSunday Gathering begins at 11 a.m.\nChild care is provided. Everyone is welcome!\nProgram ends at 12:30 p.m. \nFeatured Speaker: Gretta Vosper\, West Hill United-Toronto\, “Mind the Gap: Bridging the Space Between Religion and Secularism”\nCommunity Moment: Karin Bauer\nMusical Guest: TBA \nGretta Vosper has served West Hill United\, a congregation of The United Church of Canada located in Scarborough\, Ontario\, for nearly two decades. With the leadership of the congregation\, she has transitioned West Hill beyond doctrine and created a theologically barrier-free community known around the world for its groundbreaking work. West Hill is featured in the documentary Godless and the upcoming film Losing Our Religion\, by Zoot Media. \nIn an act of solidarity with secular Bangladeshi bloggers identified as atheists\, arrested and threatened with execution\, Gretta identified as an atheist in 2013. Recently\, the United Church has initiated a review of Gretta’s effectiveness as a minister based on her atheistic beliefs. A hearing of her beliefs took place in June 2016; Gretta was found to be “Unsuitable for ministry in the UCC” and has been recommended for dismissal. \nGretta is the author of the national bestseller With or Without God: Why the Way We Live is More Important that What We Believe\, and Amen: What Prayer Can Mean in a World Beyond Belief\, an exploration of prayer stripped of supernatural expectations. Additionally\, she has published three collections of poetry and continues to write new lyrics to traditional hymns. DESCRIPTION:Doors open at 10:30 am for coffee and conversation.\nSunday Gathering begins at 11 a.m.\nChild care is provided. We’ll be looking at the underlying psychology behind issues of sexism and the sociological structures that perpetuate them. This presentation will not discuss transgender issues or sexual orientation\, but will touch on the clash created when sexist ideologies encounter people who don’t fit the simple male/female binary. Come with an open mind and leave your egos at the door as we take a peek at gender from the other side of the fence. \nBio: Leo d’Entremont is a biologist\, Army veteran\, EMT\, published author\, and avid karaoke singer who just happens to be a transgender man. His views on gender dynamics and sexism in western society are informed by the unique perspective of a person who has been treated as both female and male. It is the beginning of a long and painful journey for victims\, families and the community. The society at large tends to remain in limbo\, unable to grasp and process this destructive pattern in our midst. The media does what it does best – creates a drama and a story best fit for ratings. What if we had the ability to piece together the steps leading up to a school shooting so that we might prevent the next one? What makes up the entirety of this phenomenon? What if you knew a school shooter? What would you ask? Please join Carrah for this most personal and necessary talk. \nAbout the speaker: Carrah Q is a Spiritual trainer\, yoga teacher\, lipstick aficionado\, meditation instructor and religious educator. SUMMARY:Sunday Gathering: Keith Fouts\, "Building an Energy-Efficient Earthbag Home in Eastern Kansas"
DESCRIPTION:Doors open at 10:30 am for coffee and conversation.\nSunday Gathering begins at 11 a.m.\nChild care is provided. Everyone is welcome!\nProgram ends at 12:30 p.m. \nFeatured Speaker: Keith Fouts\, “Building an Energy-Efficient Earthbag Home in Eastern Kansas”\nCommunity Moment: Chuck Brown\nMusical Guest: TBA\nKids: Making personal flags\nTeens: “We the people” activity \nOver time\, Keith developed a passion for taking care of the environment as he learned about our influence on the climate. One item on his bucket list included building a sustainable home; however\, his passion for travel has been at odds with building a home anchored in one location. A few years ago Keith’s parents began transitioning toward retirement and no longer needed the five-bedroom home in Ottawa that Keith grew up in. This is where the sustainable earthbag home (4\,000 bags filled with 100 lbs. of earth) came into play. \nDuring today’s talk Keith will explain why he has decided to build this type of home and how to go about building with earthbags. He will include information about other sustainable features he has added into the home (passive solar design\, rainwater cistern\, radiant in-floor heating\, etc.). \nAbout the speaker: Keith grew up in Ottawa\, Kansas. After earning a bachelor’s degree in aeronautical science from the Florida Institute of Technology\, he moved to Virginia to begin a career as a flight instructor. Unfortunately\, his first day on the job was September 11\, 2001. Religious extremists changed his career path that day. \nHe flight-instructed for the next 18 months\, but saw that aviation was not going anywhere with all the changes since 9/11. Having worked as an electrical apprentice to pay for college\, he quickly earned his journeyman\, then master electrician licenses. Then he learned about contracting opportunities for licensed electricians willing to travel. This included working five contracts at the South Pole where he eventually founded the South Pole Freethinkers. He spoke at Oasis about this topic last year (podcast episode #40). \nToday\, Keith works six to eight months a year and travels between contracts. \n*By participating in this event\, you agree to abide by the Oasis Code of Conduct (https://www.kcoasis.org/about-oasis/code-of-conduct/).
