Mary Smead grew up spending lots of time in the pastures and creeks of her grandparents’ farm. She loved finding critters and plants of all sizes and sizes and shapes. After teaching elementary school for 30 years and raising a family, she discovered the MO Master Naturalist program, which led to her working at Lakeside Nature Center. She now volunteers weekly in the animal hospital there and serves on the board as Conservation Chairman for Friends of Lakeside Nature...

The foundation has more than $4 million in about 40 separate, income-generating endowment accounts, and it taps those accounts as needed for specific projects.
