He is also an adjunct Social Sciences instructor at the Miami County Campus of Fort Scott Community College in Paola\, Kansas. Atwater has written over 200 “History and Heritage” columns for the Miami County Republic newspaper. He holds a Master of Arts degree in History from Emporia State University. DESCRIPTION:Volunteer with fellow Oasians at Scraps KC! Their mission is to get used or excess art supplies and materials to artists\, teachers\, makers\, and scouts who can use them. They’ve diverted over 300 tons of material from landfills. \nWe’ll be volunteering in their warehouse doing donation processing and pricing\, getting materials like paper clips and paint brushes ready to go out into the Teacher Resource Center or the Creative Reuse Center store. \nThey ask that all volunteers wear modest clothing for the season and closed-toed shoes. Their warehouse is not temperature regulated\, so dressing in layers is highly recommended. You might also want to bring a bottle of water to stay hydrated. \nThey can accommodate up to 25 volunteers at a time\, and children as young as three may volunteer with their parent\guardian. They recommend carpooling\, as parking is limited\, and they will need a headcount a couple days beforehand\, including kids’ ages\, to ensure they have enough age-appropriate tasks for us to do\, so please RSVP with that info. \n*By participating in this event\, you agree to abide by the Oasis Code of Conduct (http://www.kcoasis.org/about-oasis/code-of-conduct/).

DESCRIPTION:Musical guest: Maddie Lai (https://www.instagram.com/maddieglai/?hl=en)\nCommunity moment: Russ Hill\nFeatured speaker: Paul Benson\, “Famous Art Forgers and How They Were Exposed” \nWho is or was the world’s greatest art forger? We don’t know because they were/are so talented they haven’t been discovered yet! Today\, we’ll see how some of the less talented forgers were exposed. \nPaul joined the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in 1992 and has recently retired. During his 25+ years there\, he served as a Conservator of Objects\, where he was involved in examining\, advising on\, and treating three-dimensional art objects made from all types of materials. He also has a private conservation business where he treats art objects for museums and private owners\, and outdoor sculptures and fountains for municipalities and homeowners associations in the greater Kansas City area. \nPaul received a BS in Geology in 1972 from Kent State University. He worked in geophysical exploration for the oil industry in the U.S.\, South America\, and in the South Pacific from 1973 to 1986. After being laid off during the oil crisis of 1986 he changed careers and entered the art conservation field. He received a BSc in Archaeological Conservation and Material Science in 1991 from the Institute of Archaeology\, University of London.
