SUMMARY:KC Oasis Volunteers at Micah Ministry
DESCRIPTION:MASKS ARE OPTIONAL. \n*Note: It’s okay if you can’t get there until 5:15-5:30. \nAt Kansas City Oasis our values are “People are more important than beliefs\,” “human hands solve human problems\,” and “meaning comes from making a difference.” In that spirit\, we partner with Micah Ministry to help feed and clothe those in need. \nMicah Ministry serves hundreds of people every Monday evening from 5:15-7:15. They help anyone\, regardless of race\, gender\, religious (or nonreligious) affiliation\, sex\, sexual orientation\, or any other trait. Come join us in helping our less fortunate neighbors. \nVolunteers will greet the guests\, serve food\, offer beverages\, fill clothing requests and help with litter control. If there are enough volunteers\, there may be the option to sort clothing.\nThe Micah Ministry is a religious organization\, which means that the event is started by an optional group prayer at the beginning. We have never been pressured to pray with them and they have always been glad to have us participate in their group. \nDue to COVID\, masks are required\, and the event is currently being held outside instead of in the dining hall. \nPlease meet in the parking lot behind the church\, where we will get our volunteer assignments. \nBy participating in this event\, you agree to abide by the Oasis Code of Conduct (http://www.kcoasis.org/about-oasis/code-of-conduct/).

SUMMARY:KC Oasis Sunday Gathering – Featured speaker: DeAnn Gregory\, "LED Lighting – The Good\, The Bad and The Ugly"
DESCRIPTION:Musical guest: Jansen Wooton (https://www.instagram.com/jansendoesmusic/)\nCommunity moment: Jacob Mitchell\nFeatured speaker: DeAnn Gregory\, “LED Lighting – The Good\, The Bad and The Ugly” \nDeAnn is a Missouri Master Naturalist and longtime conservationist\, currently serving on the DarkSky Missouri board. In 2020\, while serving on a Thomas Hart Benton Sierra Club Committee\, she researched environmental and societal impacts of overlighting in anticipation of Kansas City’s (then future) planned transition to LED streetlights. A Sierra Club subcommittee robustly advocated for environmental considerations\, influencing the final outcome. (Residents in Tucson and other cities that chose environmentally responsible lighting said\, “Even the people look better.”) Light pollution is currently a robust area of scientific research worldwide\, across many fields of study. A brief synopsis can be found in the 2023 Artificial Light at Night State of the Science report (zenodo.org/records/8071915). DeAnn will describe the causes of light pollution\, ecological impacts\, and current projects of DarkSky Missouri to raise awareness. DeAnn is retired from Missouri Department of Natural Resources and resides in Kansas City with her husband\, two dogs and five chickens. \nParallel park in the neighborhood near our building or in the “free on Sundays” KU P2 parking garage two blocks west of our community center. Please reserve the small south parking lot for those who need the ramp to enter the building. \nBy participating in this event\, you agree to abide by the Oasis Code of Conduct (http://www.kcoasis.org/about-oasis/code-of-conduct/).

SUMMARY:KC Oasis Sunday Gathering – Featured speaker: Penelope Mais Ouis\, "A Journey to My Own Power"
DESCRIPTION:Musical guest: Colby Gile (https://www.facebook.com/TheStolenWinnebagos)\nCommunity moment: Bill Clause\nFeatured speaker: Penelope Mais Ouis\, “A Journey to My Own Power” \nErin Owsley (she/they) grew up on stage. She spent most of her childhood playing in the woods of Lake Tahoe and was especially connected to her Gramma Max\, watching Gypsy and strippers compete on Phil Donahue. Many years later\, as a stay-at-home mom and foster parent\, she took a burlesque performance class in 2015 as a way to pushed herself\, and while the experience was certainly overwhelming\, Erin knew she had begun a new chapter in her life. Penelope Mais Ouis was born in Colorado Springs\, and while the experience was certainly overwhelming\, Erin knew she had begun a new chapter in her life. Her experience on stage as Penelope empowered her and filled her with confidence. It taught her about safety\, consent\, sexuality and gender\, and gave her the courage to leave an abusive marriage. She found success performing solo and in groups all across the world\, winning awards such as the title of Most Classic in the Edmonton Burlesque festival. \nIn 2019 she moved to Kansas City and immediately recognized that the musical and art history of this city lent itself well to becoming a hub for burlesque in the Midwest. In December 2022\, she produced a speakeasy style Classic Burlesque revue in the West Bottoms. It sold out. She began her mission to elevate the burlesque scene and partnered with local brands\, venues\, artists and performers. In 2024 she’s bringing artists from across the country right here to the City of Fountains\, many for the first time. They’re falling in love with the city as well\, and telling their friends. Ultimately the thing Penelope loves the most about burlesque is creating a relationship with her audience. They are the real stars of her show\, and without happy audience members she knows none of her success would be possible. When she’s not performing as The Yes You May Girl\, Erin enjoys a loud night at home with her many children and pets. \nParallel park in the neighborhood near our building or in the “free on Sundays” KU P2 parking garage two blocks west of our community center.

SUMMARY:KC Oasis Sunday Gathering – Featured speaker: Amy Scrivner\, BikeWalkKC: "Who Wins When Driving Is a Prerequisite for Thriving?"
DESCRIPTION:Featured speaker: Amy\, Scrivner\, BikeWalkKC: “Who Wins When Driving Is a Prerequisite for Thriving?” \nAmy Scrivner has worked in the nonprofit sector since 1997\, specializing in fundraising and communications. Several years ago\, she had to take the car keys away from her dad. It was one of the hardest things she’d ever done. He accused her of taking away his freedom. Her dad’s story is one Amy often repeats in her role at BikeWalkKC. It’s a story that resonates with a lot of people\, and it motivates her to do this work. Your ability to drive should NOT predict your ability to thrive in our region. Amy wants to make sure that when the time comes to give up the car keys\, we have better options than her dad did. The work BikeWalkKC does is helping to create those options. \nParallel park in the neighborhood near our building or in the “free on Sundays” KU P2 parking garage two blocks west of our community center.
