She is the CEO and co-founder of Black Pockets LLC\, which is a financial and cultural literacy company that centers on QTBIPOC. They are director of Communications and Outreach at the Kansas City Anti-Violence Project. She is also member of the LGBTQ+ Greek organization\, Alpha Nu (Alpha Psi Kappa)\, and a member of the ball house Alain Mikli. CiCi is using her life’s experiences to support others as they navigate their own. \nMelissa Brown\nShe/They\nMelissa is a black multiracial queer stem. They are COO and co-founder of Black Pockets LLC. She is a director for the Kansas City Anti Violence Project (KCAVP) and the co-chair for the National Anti-Violence Programs Governance Committee. They are heavily involved in the LGBTQ+ community as a board member for the Kansas City Center for Inclusion\, an ambassador for the Mid-America Gay and Lesbian Chamber\, a member of Collective Force\, and a member of the national ball house Alain Mikli. Melissa dedicates their life to the liberation of communities most impacted by violence and oppression.

He then taught high school in Salina\, Kansas\, for three years before entering graduate school at The University of Texas at Austin\, where he received his Ph.D. in counseling psychology. He has also studied at the University of Oklahoma and at the United States International University in San Diego. He has worked at an alcohol and drug treatment facility in Lincoln\, Nebraska. Most of his professional life was spent working as a psychologist and therapist at Family Guidance Center in St. Joseph\, Missouri.

DESCRIPTION:At Kansas City Oasis our values are “People are more important than beliefs\,” “human hands solve human problems\,” and “meaning comes from making a difference.” In that spirit\, we partner with Micah Ministry to help feed and clothe those in need. \nThe Micah Ministry is a charitable organization that seeks to help anyone\, regardless of race\, gender\, religious (or nonreligious) affiliation\, sex\, sexual orientation\, or any other trait – as long as they could use some help\, the Micah Ministry is there to help them. \nThe Micah Ministry operates in a way that’s a bit different from traditional support organizations. They feed those who seek their services with a restaurant-style waiting operation: Volunteers take drink and food orders and deliver the food to them\, providing seconds if needed and continuing to refill their drinks as needed. \nIn addition to food\, if there are enough volunteers\, they operate a clothing and household items (toiletries\, candles\, blankets\, and other items) store. Volunteers ask each person for their order\, go back into the store room\, and retrieve the requested items as long as they are in stock. \nThe Micah Ministry is a religious organization\, which means that the event is started by an optional group prayer at the beginning. \nWe have never been pressured to pray with them and they have always been glad to have us participate in their group. \nPictures are permitted to be taken prior to the admission of those in need\, but\, once people are being admitted into the dining area\, no pictures are allowed. \nBy participating in this event\, you agree to abide by the Oasis Code of Conduct (https://www.kcoasis.org/about-oasis/code-of-conduct/).

Her poetry\, academic papers\, and personal essays have been published in anthologies and literary and online journals. She has opened for and introduced many great writers\, singers and activists\, and has been featured at a host of universities and venues nationwide. Born and raised in Kansas City\, Missouri\, Natasha has a BA from Jackson State University and an MA from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Natasha’s Black Feminist approach is reflected in her writing\, poetry and performance pieces. Natasha brings the fire! She is a divorced mother of two awesome children. Once asked in an interview what makes her unique she replied\, “…most people lie to themselves\, but I like to reveal myself.” \nIn 2015 Natasha released her first book\, Screaming Times (Spartan Press\, 2015). Of her work\, critic and poet Denise Low writes\, “Poems lift off the page\, almost reading themselves. Unlike some performance poetry\, her words translate well to the printed page.” Her second book\, The Only Other (Main Street Rag\, 2016) dives into the taboo voice of the other woman. In 2019 Natasha released her first self-published and nonfiction book in collaboration with her son\, titled\, Mama Sutra: Love and Lovemaking Advice to My Son. In 2020\, Natasha self-released I Say\, T(He)y Say\, a chapbook about a special decade in her maternal grandmother’s life. In the same month she released Growing Up Sina\, her first novel created after challenging herself creatively to grow outside of her first love\, poetry. \nNatasha’s CDs\, DragonButterFirefly (2006)\, This is Love… (2010)\, CuddleComplex (2016) and DVD Live at the Blue Room (2015) display how Natasha connects with any crowd with maternal warmth and unrelenting honesty. This mother of two is also the founder and curator of Black Space Black Art\, an organization created to promote the exhibition of African American visual arts and businesses. She is also the founder and curator of the El-Scari Harvey Art Gallery\, a small art gallery that focuses on exhibiting marginalized artists and creating relevant events. Adrian digs deep into the Sunflower State’s history to reveal stories such as the first woman mayor in America\, a town named after a World Series-winning baseball player\, the story of the Kansas-bound madman that shot John Wilkes Booth and the invention of a most dangerous new version of polo…but played with cars. \nAbout the speaker: Adrian Zink is a native Kansan who has worked in the history profession for over 15 years at a variety of museums\, universities\, archives and historic sites. Born and raised in Larned\, he holds Bachelor of Arts degrees in history and political science from the University of Kansas\, a master’s in library science from the University of Maryland and a master’s in history from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He currently works at the National Archives-Kansas City. He has previously worked at the Kansas Historical Society\, Marquette University Archives\, the National Press Club Library and Archives in Washington\, D.C.\, and at the University of Kansas Natural History Museum. He and his wife\, Carla Stafford\, have three daughters. After graduating from Raytown South High School\, Erik remained in Kansas City to attend Penn Valley Community College\, where he discovered history. Erik later received his Bachelor of Arts degree in history from Central Missouri State University. \nHe then returned to Kansas City and taught social studies at Genesis School for three years\, where he and his students gave tours of the historic sites in the Kansas City area. It was also during this time that Erik published his first book of poetry\, Native Life\, a collection of poems and pictures. Erik went on to earn his Master of Arts degree in business from Webster University. \nIn 2009\, Erik became sole proprietor of the Kansas City Tour Company and began conducting tours of the historic sites in the Kansas City area and creating interactive\, historic slideshow presentations that allow people to make the connections between the past\, present and future through history. In May 2017\, Erik published “Script From 12th to 18th Street\,” a condensed\, factual account of Jim Crow segregation in the Heart of America. In August 2018\, Erik was referenced in the New York Times article “On a Civil Rights Trail\, Essential Sights and Indelible Detours\,” written by Ron Stodghill and discussing 18th and Vine’s contribution to the National Civil Rights Movement.

As Director of Policy\, Preston shapes state and federal strategies and policies that center the voices and leadership of young people in the South and Midwest. Prior to joining URGE\, Preston served as Senior Legal and International Policy Analyst with Advocates for Youth\, the Senior Policy Analyst at the Center for Health and Gender Equity\, the Judicial Law Clerk to the Honorable S. Pamela Gray and the Honorable Errol R. Arthur\, and was a Policy Analyst with the Center for American Progress’ LGBT Research and Communications department. \nIn addition to his work at URGE\, Preston is an Adjunct Professor of Law at Georgetown University Law Center\, teaching LGBT Health Law and Policy; is an active member of\nAlpha Phi Alpha Fraternity\, Inc.; and is the Co-Chair of the Board of Directors for the Collective Action for Safe Spaces. DESCRIPTION:Zoom: https://success.zoom.us/j/3448335044\n\nFeatured speaker: Athena Jeanne Zeiter-Hale\, “Compromise and Cooperation in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights: Reevaluating Eleanor Roosevelt’s Contributions and How International\, Intercultural Cooperation Created a Truly Secular Document”\n\nCommunity moment: Joslyn Rose\nMusical guest: John Mueter\n\nConventional wisdom on the history of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) of 1948 argues that Eleanor Roosevelt’s appointment as a delegate to the United Nations was a mostly symbolic gesture\, that while she contributed greatly as an organizer and advocate for the UDHR\, she contributed very little intellectually\, and that the finished document was heavily influenced by Western Powers with little input from the Global South and developing countries. Athena will challenge all of these ideas by detailing Eleanor Roosevelt’s decades-long background in the ideological development of human rights leading up to the 1948 UDHR\, explaining how some of the most important contributions to the Declaration were non-Western\, and explaining how the emphasis on universality\, international cooperation\, and compromise created a document with truly secular principles.\n\nAbout the speaker:\nAthena Jeanne Zeiter-Hale (she/her/hers) received her bachelor of arts in History from Stetson University in 2016. As an undergraduate\, she won a research grant proposal contest\, which allowed her to travel to the FDR Presidential Library in Hyde Park\, New York\, and spend three weeks in the archives researching Eleanor Roosevelt’s leadership as chair of the UN Commission on Human Rights and the drafting and adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Athena’s finished capstone project won the “History Manuscript of the Year” Award at Stetson University and was presented at the 2015 National Conference on Undergraduate Research in Spokane\, Washington. Since college\, Athena has worked as a political organizer in Philadelphia during the 2016 General Election\, served for a year in AmeriCorps working with Multicultural Students at her alma mater\, coordinated the 2019 New Jersey Trans Youth Forum\, and most recently works as the Visitor Services and Community Outreach Representative and the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate. Athena lives in Boston\, Massachusetts\, where she plans to continue her Eleanor Roosevelt and Human Rights work in grad school in the near future.

This talk will focus on how Caesar came to start this organization through sharing a bit of his personal story\, as well as how he’s overcome the adversity he has faced.\nHe will also be teaching the audience two simple techniques on how to manage stress and anxiety through breathing and mental exercises. Growing up\, Caesar struggled with chronic depression and social anxiety from a rough domestic environment. He experienced tremendous personal loss\, that has molded him into the young man he is today.\nCaesar is currently going into his first year of Teach for America in Miami-Dade county as a high school biology teacher. He is the Head coach of swimming and water polo at Mater Lakes Academy\, and the co-founder of the MindPower Foundation.

DESCRIPTION:Zoom Link: https://bit.ly/KCOasis \nMusical guest: Amber Martin (https://www.ambermartinmusic.net/) \nCommunity moment: JT Eberhard \nFeatured speaker: Joy Ellsworth\, “Environmental Justice” \nJoy will share insights that an East KC neighborhood association president and a Yankton Dakota Chief brought to her organization\, Clement Waters Retreat\, during the pandemic\, regarding what actions for environmental justice can be taken by people at different starting points (of affluence\, cultural background\, socio-political influence\, etc.). \nJoy Ellsworth is a founder of Clement Waters Retreat\, a nonprofit organization arranging activities that help people discern holistic ways to act as good stewards of nature\, of their communities\, and of themselves as their own first change agent. The organization’s theory of change is heavily influenced by the lived experience and values of American population groups who have had to resist and rise above traumas and cyclical and generational poverty. The organization’s founding was spurred by a zero-cost fluke healing in the Ellsworth family. An urban-to-rural move in 2013 had forced necessary lifestyle changes that effectively eliminated the sight-threatening symptoms of cofounder Luke Ellsworth’s auto-immune disorder. Joy noticed similarities of practice since she had\, 10 years prior\, instinctively utilized nature therapy methods to self-treat assault-incurred PTSD. Joy has since become a certified nature therapy guide by the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy. Joy holds an MPA in Nonprofit Management from the Henry W. DESCRIPTION:Zoom link: https://bit.ly/KCOasis\n\nMusical guest: Sapphire Son (https://www.facebook.com/sapphireson)\n\nCommunity moment: Ami Varney\n\nFeatured speaker: Deborah Barker\, Archivist\, Black Archives of Mid-America\n\nThe mission of the Black Archives of Mid-America in Kansas City\, Inc. is to collect\, preserve and make available to the public materials documenting the social\, economic\, political and cultural histories of persons of African American descent in the central United States\, with particular emphasis in the Kansas City\, Missouri\, region. Black Archives of Mid-America is an educational resource and provides access to its collections for research\, exhibition and publication to honor our community heritage and to catalyze public awareness.\n\nDeborah Barker was born in Winfield\, Kansas. Her father was a wholesale grower of tropical plants and her mother was an English professor at Southwestern College in Winfield. Deborah earned her B.A. from the University of Colorado in Boulder and her M.A. (with honors) from the University of Kansas at Lawrence\, and did 60 more hours and taught art history there for several years. She ran the Franklin County (Kansas) Historical Society for 29 years before retiring to move to KC to help her daughter with her son\, Langston. Deborah visited the Black Archives of Mid-America and realized they needed a lot of archival help\, and signed on – as the only white person working there. DESCRIPTION:MASKS ARE REQUIRED.\n\n*Note: It’s okay if you can’t get there until 5:15-5:30.\n\nAt Kansas City Oasis our values are “People are more important than beliefs\,” “human hands solve human problems\,” and “meaning comes from making a difference.” In that spirit\, we partner with Micah Ministry to help feed and clothe those in need.\n\nMicah Ministry serves hundreds of people every Monday evening from 5:15-7:15. They help anyone\, regardless of race\, gender\, religious (or nonreligious) affiliation\, sex\, sexual orientation\, or any other trait. Come join us in helping our less fortunate neighbors.\n\nVolunteers will greet the guests\, serve food\, offer beverages\, fill clothing requests and help with litter control. If there are enough volunteers\, there may be the option to sort clothing.\nThe Micah Ministry is a religious organization\, which means that the event is started by an optional group prayer at the beginning. We have never been pressured to pray with them and they have always been glad to have us participate in their group.\n\nDue to COVID\, masks are required\, and the event is currently being held outside instead of in the dining hall.\n\nPlease meet in the parking lot behind the church\, where we will get our volunteer assignments.\n\nBy participating in this event\, you agree to abide by the Oasis Code of Conduct (http://www.kcoasis.org/about-oasis/code-of-conduct/).

DESCRIPTION:Zoom link: https://bit.ly/KCOasis \nMusical guest: Roy Baldwin Phillips \nCommunity moment: Doug Sirek \nFeatured speaker: Patty Reynolds\, National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) \nPatty Reynolds has been a member and volunteer of NAMI – the National Alliance on Mental Illness – for 10-plus years. After becoming a victim of a violent crime in her home\, she sought out therapy for PTSD. Her therapist suggested a support group and they found NAMI. It has been instrumental in her recovery. Patty founded the NAMI KC board of directors and served two years as board president. She has worked for The Missouri Division of Employment Security for the last 22 years doing social work. She and her husband have owned a home in midtown KC for the last 26 years. Patty also plays viola with the Independence Symphony.
