SUMMARY:Sunday gathering: Cheryl Kulp\, "A Conversation About Special Education"
DESCRIPTION:Doors open at 10:30 am for coffee and conversation.\nSunday Gathering begins at 11 a.m.\nChildcare is provided. Everyone is welcome!\nProgram ends at 12:30 p.m.Featured Speaker: Cheryl Kulp\nCommunity Moment: Melody Petet\nMusical Guest: JJ Cantrell \n\n\nSchool can be challenging enough for kids\, and any additional challenges can all but put an education out of reach. With a good education being a key factor to success as an adult\, getting the most out of school is increasingly more and more important. Parents who know about the options\, resources\, and processes will be better advocates for their child and make school more enjoyable for everyone. \nCheryl A. Kulp has over 40 years of experience in education and has taught elementary\, secondary\, and college-level students. She has been a regular classroom teacher\, a curriculum support specialist and a consulting teacher. Raised on a farm in central Kansas\, she earned her Bachelor of Secondary Education from Fort Hays State and started teaching at Salina High School. Her experience with special education began in 1975 as the parent of a special needs child\, which led her to get her Bachelor of Elementary Education and Master of Special Education from Washburn University and eventually to study Special Education Administration at Kansas State University. She finally allowed her teacher’s certificate to expire after her third retirement from Topeka 501 as a consulting teacher. \n*By participating in this event\, you agree to abide by the Oasis Code of Conduct (https://www.kcoasis.org/about-oasis/code-of-conduct/)

SUMMARY:Marilee Harrison\, "On Breathing and Walking at the Same Time"
DESCRIPTION:Doors open at 10:30 am for coffee and conversation.\nSunday Gathering begins at 11 a.m.\nChildcare is provided. Everyone is welcome!\nProgram ends at 12:30 p.m. \nFeatured Speaker: Marilee Harrison\, “On Breathing and Walking at the Same Time”\nCommunity Moment: John Mueter\nMusical Guest: JT Eberhard \n“Reality is known through reason.” That’s one of our core Oasis values. How do we continue forward movement with a measure of reason when faced with distressing circumstances in which emotion tends to rule the day (or the year\, or the nation)? When it’s easier to ignore or seek distractions from important issues? Maintaining balance and self-care are key skills for activism at all levels. We’ll consider reality-based ways to maintain sustainable forward momentum. \nMarilee Harrison is the KC Oasis Executive Director. She retired from a career as a psychotherapist specializing in trauma and abuse issues\, after receiving a B.A. in Psychology from Wichita State University and Master of Social Work from the University of Kansas. Once a religious fundamentalist\, she emerged from her roots in a Mennonite community to become a secular community organizer. She founded and coordinated secular\, reason-based organizations at the local and state level\, and served in national leadership positions. Maintaining an abiding commitment to social justice\, she was at the forefront of marriage equality\, officiating hundreds of weddings as a Humanist Celebrant. She aspires to cultivate a bountiful garden\, enduring friendships\, and abundant laughter in the process. \n*By participating in this event\, you agree to abide by the Oasis Code of Conduct (https://www.kcoasis.org/about-oasis/code-of-conduct/)

SUMMARY:KC Oasis Volunteers at Micah Ministry
DESCRIPTION:  \nAt Kansas City Oasis our values are “People are more important than beliefs\,” “human hands solve human problems\,” and “meaning comes from making a difference.” In that spirit\, we partner with Micah Ministry to help feed and clothe those in need. \nThe Micah Ministry is a charitable organization that seeks to help anyone\, regardless of race\, gender\, religious (or nonreligious) affiliation\, sex\, sexual orientation\, or any other trait – as long as they could use some help\, the Micah Ministry is there to help them. \nThe Micah Ministry operates in a way that’s a bit different from traditional support organizations. They feed those who seek their services with a restaurant-style waiting operation: Volunteers take drink and food orders and deliver the food to them\, providing seconds if needed and continuing to refill their drinks as needed. \nIn addition to food\, if there are enough volunteers\, they operate a clothing and household items (toiletries\, candles\, blankets\, and other items) store. Volunteers ask each person for their order\, go back into the store room\, and retrieve the requested items as long as they are in stock. \nThe Micah Ministry is a religious organization\, which means that the event is started by an optional group prayer at the beginning. \nWe have never been pressured to pray with them and they have always been glad to have us participate in their group. \nPictures are permitted to be taken prior to the admission of those in need\, but\, once people are being admitted into the dining area\, no pictures are allowed. \nBy participating in this event\, you agree to abide by the Oasis Code of Conduct (https://www.kcoasis.org/about-oasis/code-of-conduct/).
