Are the Humanities Still Valuable?”\nMusical Guest: TBA\nCommunity Moment: Rebecca Mosley \nWhat are the Humanities? Are the Humanities still valuable? This presentation will explain the initial development of Humanities Councils throughout the nation and highlight ways in which the Missouri Humanities Council is working statewide to interpret\, document and share the rich history and heritage of Missouri. Current initiatives of the MHC include the Show Me Missouri Speakers’ Bureau\, Interpreting the Trail of Tears in Missouri\, an early learning literacy program called “Read From the Start\,” veterans’ writing workshops\, heritage programs\, public forums\, exhibits\, grants\, and so much more! \nDr. Monique Johnston is director of education at the Missouri Humanities Council\, where she works to enrich lives and strengthen communities by connecting Missourians with the people\, places and ideas that shape our society. Monique is a Kansas City native and has experience in program development\, fundraising and partnership cultivation. With an Interdisciplinary Studies B.A. in German\, Biology\, and African American Studies from the University of Missouri-Columbia and an M.A. & Ph.D. in African American Studies from Temple University\, Monique uses her local nonprofit work and international research experience to support statewide efforts to develop diverse cultural exhibits\, lectures and symposia. DESCRIPTION:Featured Speaker: Zachary Mallory\nCommunity Moment: Erica Batton\nMusical Guest: Aleia y Ryan \nConversion Therapy is currently banned in 16 states and many states\, including Missouri\, have pending legislation to bring a ban to this discredited practice. Conversion Therapy is an attempt to change sexual orientation\, gender expression or gender identity and is often aligned with religious practices. Zachary will share his experiences with conversion therapy and the abuse that was endured during in hopes to raise awareness about the dangers of the long-lasting effects that a survivor faces after conversion therapy. \nAbout the speaker:\nZachary Mallory is an LGBTQ+ advocate focused on mental health and suicide prevention. Zachary is a suicide attempt survivor and a survivor of conversion therapy. DESCRIPTION:We will be grilling out and partying with the veterans at St. Michael’s\, and we could use some help to make it a fun day for everyone. This will be a ‘family picnic’ kind of event\, so feel free to bring your chairs\, blankets\, soccer balls and children. \nKansas City Atheist Coalition will be providing the grilled meats\, buns and drinks for the veterans and volunteers\, we are expecting 150 people total. DESCRIPTION:Featured Speaker: Mandisa Thomas\nCommunity Moment: Community Group Recap\nMusical Guest: Chris Foster \nMandisa Thomas\, a native of New York City\, is a founder and current president of Black Nonbelievers\, Inc. Although never formally indoctrinated into belief\, Mandisa was heavily exposed to Christianity\, black nationalism and a bit of Islam. As a child she loved reading\, and enjoyed various tales of gods from different cultures\, including Greek and Ghanaian. “Through reading these stories and being taught about other cultures at an early age\, I quickly noticed that there were similarities and differences between those deities and the God of the Christian Bible. I couldn’t help but wonder what made this God so special that he warrants such prevalence in today’s society\,” she recalls. \nMandisa was featured in the April 30tissue of JET magazine\, has been a guest speaker with such organizations as the Secular Humanists of the Low Country\, Humanists of Florida and American Atheists. She has been also been a guest on podcasts including: The Critical Eye\, Ask an Atheist\, and the Black Freethinkers Blogtalk Radio Show.
