SUMMARY:KC Oasis Volunteers at Micah Ministry
DESCRIPTION:MASKS ARE OPTIONAL. \n*Note: It’s okay if you can’t get there until 5:15-5:30. \nAt Kansas City Oasis our values are “People are more important than beliefs\,” “human hands solve human problems\,” and “meaning comes from making a difference.” In that spirit\, we partner with Micah Ministry to help feed and clothe those in need. \nMicah Ministry serves hundreds of people every Monday evening from 5:15-7:15. They help anyone\, regardless of race\, gender\, religious (or nonreligious) affiliation\, sex\, sexual orientation\, or any other trait. Come join us in helping our less fortunate neighbors. \nVolunteers will greet the guests\, serve food\, offer beverages\, fill clothing requests and help with litter control. If there are enough volunteers\, there may be the option to sort clothing.\nThe Micah Ministry is a religious organization\, which means that the event is started by an optional group prayer at the beginning. We have never been pressured to pray with them and they have always been glad to have us participate in their group. \nDue to COVID\, masks are required\, and the event is currently being held outside instead of in the dining hall. \nPlease meet in the parking lot behind the church\, where we will get our volunteer assignments. \nBy participating in this event\, you agree to abide by the Oasis Code of Conduct (http://www.kcoasis.org/about-oasis/code-of-conduct/).

SUMMARY:KC Oasis Sunday Gathering – Featured speaker: John "JR" Bruce\, "Buffalo Soldier Stories"
DESCRIPTION:Musical guest: Kemet Coleman (https://www.kemetcoleman.com/)\nFeatured speaker: John “JR” Bruce\, “Buffalo Soldier Stories” \nJohn “JR” Bruce is president of the KC Buffalo Soldiers Chapter and earned four Bronze Stars for Valor in Combat in Vietnam. He is a Certified Oral Storyteller. \nAbout Buffalo Soldiers: One of the greatest and most successful human experiments in American history had its seminal roots in Missouri. Starting in 1866\, Jefferson Barracks\, Missouri\, was the receiving station for the men (and woman) of color following the Civil War. There the most unlikely of soldiers joined the United States Army in the United States Colored Troops (USCT) by the name of Cathay Williams\, aka Pvt. William Cathay\, the only known female to serve in what became known as the Buffalo Soldiers. Pvt. Isaac Johnson\, the great grandfather of one of the presenters enlisted on May 6\, 1866\, and joined his company at Jefferson Barracks\, Missouri. An original Buffalo Soldier\, he traveled across Missouri by rail to the Western Frontier to serve with honor in the 38th and 24th Infantry\, and later reenlisted into the famed 9th Cavalry. His story is the basis of “Slave to Soldier.” \nParallel park in the neighborhood near our building or in the “free on Sundays” KU P2 parking garage two blocks west of our community center. SUMMARY:KC Oasis Sunday Gathering – Featured speaker: Mx. Niki Aktipis\, "What’s in Your Pantry?: Destigmatizing Period Poverty"
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: We are holding a donation drive in conjunction with this event. Please bring period products to donate if you are able. \nPeriod poverty is a critical issue affecting individuals globally\, especially those from low-income backgrounds. It refers to the lack of access to sanitary products\, menstrual hygiene education and proper sanitation facilities\, which hinders the ability of menstruating individuals to manage their periods with dignity and comfort. This leads to significant challenges in health\, education and overall well-being. In many places\, stigma surrounding menstruation exacerbates the problem\, further marginalizing those affected. Addressing period poverty requires systemic changes including policy interventions\, affordable access to menstrual products\, and comprehensive education to normalize discussions around menstruation and promote equality. \nHow do you destigmatize periods and support communities? In the last four years of teaching\, Niki has taken on the challenge of addressing period poverty within their high school and addressing period inequities. In this presentation\, they will discuss what period poverty is\, its intersectionality with period equity\, how to unravel period poverty within low-income public schools\, and how to support communities that face these challenges. \nWant to support Wyandotte High School’s period pantry? Here is their wishlist: https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/2YV8YM5WWW1X?ref_=wl_share \nAn Ohio native\, Niki has been a Kansas City\, Kansas\, resident since late 2017. Prior to landing in the great city split between two states\, Niki received their BSc in biopsychology from The University of Michigan (2013) and their MSc in conservation biology from the University of Derby (2015). As a conservationist\, their work has taken them all over the world and across the USA. Highlights include their work with leatherback sea turtles in Costa Rica and desert tortoise monitoring in the Mojave Desert. In 2022\, Niki completed their two-year commitment to Teach for America in conjunction with obtaining their MSE in secondary education from Fort Hays State University. In January 2024\, they started their third master’s degree in public health at the University of Kansas\, with plans to complete in fall 2026. Niki strongly believes that to be a scientist also means to be an educator. They are going into their fifth year as a proud high school life science teacher endorsed in teaching English language learners. Their current work project is expanding KCKPS’s only forensic science program over the next two school years. This will open up access to students in the field of crime scene science. In their first year of teaching\, Niki saw a gap in services for students who experience periods and decided to do something about it. They founded the school’s first period pantry\, which now services 20+ classrooms across Wyandotte High School. Since then\, they have also helped their students found the Skittles Student Union – a student union dedicated to fostering community among LGBTQ+ students and alumni. Niki calls Kansas City\, Kansas\, home with their mini urban zoo. \nBy participating in this event\, you agree to abide by the Oasis Code of Conduct (http://www.kcoasis.org/about-oasis/code-of-conduct/).
