Featured Speaker: Lois Bugg Shadrick “Laying the Groundwork for a Conversation About Race: Creating a Shared Experience”

With racial tension running high after repeated high-profile incidents in the news, Lois believes that we must start the conversations that can build the empathy needed for true advocacy of people not like yourself. During our October 4th gathering we are going to lay the groundwork for a conversation by participating in a shared experience.

Here are some questions to think about in preparation for the shared experience. You do not have to share your answers during the shared experience.
*Are you comfortable talking about race/racism? What makes you uncomfortable?
*When do you notice race? How often do you think about it? On a scale of 1-10, what impact has it had on your life? Who do you think shares your views or experiences of race?
*Think about your daily encounters with people of different races (work, classes, groups/clubs you belong to, etc.). What do you notice? Who’s absent, who’s present? Why?
*Does race still matter? Is it useful or divisive to talk about race? *What’s wrong with the way we talk about race?
*Does everyone have an equal opportunity to succeed? Should they?
*Are race-based remedies like affirmative action fair? Why or why not?
*What does racial disparity mean to you? What does equity mean to you?

Meet Lois Bugg Shadrick:
Lois Bugg Shadrick has a long and distinguished career as a workforce developer and corporate trainer for corporations and nonprofit organizations alike. Through her assignments across the U.S., Asia and Latin America, Lois has worked to protect her clients’ greatest asset – the people. Whether working on initiatives to start reward and recognition programs, reinvent organizations, or appreciate diversity, Lois strives to answer one central question: What will it take to create a work environment where everyone’s unique contribution is valued and their productivity is optimized? Through her conference planning for African-American and women’s groups, as well as her training classes and workshops in gender communication issues, team building, change management and worker productivity, Lois has touched the lives of hundreds and has earned the title of Inclusion Coach.
