“Reality is known through reason.” That’s one of our core Oasis values. How do we continue forward movement with a measure of reason when faced with distressing circumstances in which emotion tends to rule the day (or the year, or the nation)? When it’s easier to ignore or seek distractions from important issues? Maintaining balance and self-care are key skills for activism at all levels. We’ll consider reality-based ways to maintain sustainable forward momentum.
Marilee Harrison is the KC Oasis Executive Director. She retired from a career as a psychotherapist specializing in trauma and abuse issues, after receiving a B.A. in Psychology from Wichita State University and Master of Social Work from the University of Kansas. Once a religious fundamentalist, she emerged from her roots in a Mennonite community to become a secular community organizer. She founded and coordinated secular, reason-based organizations at the local and state level, and served in national leadership positions. Maintaining an abiding commitment to social justice, she was at the forefront of marriage equality, officiating hundreds of weddings as a Humanist Celebrant. She aspires to cultivate a bountiful garden, enduring friendships, and abundant laughter in the process.
