Dwight D. Eisenhower said in his 1961 speech, “In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist.” In a 1980 speech, prominent physician Arnold Relman followed that up when he described the changing face of American health care as “the new medical-industrial complex.” He suggested that market-driven health care would simply add to the explosion of medical expenditures and the growing problems of inequity and variable quality. Dr. Kingsley will talk about the power and influence of a new medical-industrial complex on our health care system as well as on the health of Americans.

Before retiring, Dr. Kingsley was a research assistant professor in the Department of Health Policy & Management at KU MED. He was on the graduate faculty and designed and taught courses in scientific methodology and statistics for the masters and Ph.D. programs. He retired from that position two years ago, but has remained an active member of the faculty and continues to conduct research and publish in peer-reviewed journals.
