In a time when it seems like the forces of history are shaping us, it’s important to remember how history actually gets made. While presidents and politicians certainly have an impact, the nation’s course is often set by local people engaging with their local community. This talk will draw upon the stories of a few of Kansas Citians to show how our community played a surprisingly pivotal role in the rise of the nation’s movement for LGBT rights.

Christopher D. Cantwell is an assistant professor of history and religious studies at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, where he teaches classes on religion, memory and modern America. A native of Rockford, Illinois, Cantwell, his wife and two sons have called Kansas City home for the last four years.
