Mike Aus is a community organizer, international speaker and emerging thought leader. After graduating from the University of Michigan, he spent four years teaching English in Japan and then nearly 20 years as a pastor.
After realizing he could no longer affirm the dogmas of religion, Mike came out as a nonbeliever on MSNBC’s “Up With Chris Hays” in March 2012. Soon after, Mike and some friends in Houston began to wonder if they could form a new kind of community nonprofit that would provide the benefits of bringing people coming together in community but without the dogmas and super-naturalism of religion. In September 2012, Houston Oasis was launched and it has been meeting and growing ever since. In response to a growing demand for Oasis communities in other cities, Mike co-founded The Oasis Network in 2015, the affiliate organization that helps to launch and support Oasis communities across North America. In August 2014, Mike’s work with Houston Oasis was the subject of an article in TIME magazine. His nonprofit work has also been featured in the Huffington Post, The Atlantic, Religion News Service, the Houston Chronicle, Germany’s Süddeutsche Zeitung, and many more.*By participating in this event, you agree to abide by the Oasis Code of Conduct (
