Kansas City, MO (March 20th, 2015)— As it completes its first year of building a growing and thriving freethought community, Kansas City Oasis is taking time to look back on its success. Within its first year, Oasis has successfully provided freethinkers with a safe place to learn, where they can celebrate life, find social support, and give back to the community.

“When we opened our doors last year, we knew there was a huge need for an organization to serve the needs of the local secular community,” says Executive Director Helen Stringer. “But our growth has exceeded our expectations, thanks to the support of everyone who participates and our many volunteers. Attendance has grown to the point where we’re in the process of relocating to a larger facility. We couldn’t be more thrilled and energized!”

As a retreat of sorts for the secular community, including (but not limited to) Agnostics, Humanists, Skeptics, Atheists, Freethinkers, Deists, questioning Theists and more, Oasis’ mission is to bring like-minded individuals and families together in a compassionate environment, to celebrate the human experience, and to feel inspired and empowered.

Attendance at Oasis’ weekly Sunday gatherings has been growing steadily, though the group definitely saw a spike after a January feature article in The Kansas City Star titled, Atheists, agnostics, humanists find community at Kansas City Oasis. The organization caters to families through children’s programming and also hosts numerous social, volunteer, and community events.

For its anniversary celebration on Sunday, April 5, Mike Aus, co-founder of The Oasis Network and executive director of Houston Oasis will be the featured speaker. Mike, a former pastor, was featured in a Time Magazine article in July 2014. Oasis is growing nationally beyond Houston and Kansas City, with groups opening their doors in Dallas this month and Boston soon after.

KC Oasis is Kansas City’s first alternative to faith-based communities, offering a community of compassion and reason to come together to celebrate the human experience. It’s a place where life is celebrated, family is valued, and all people matter. For more information, visit KCOasis.org, like us on Facebook, or follow us on Twitter.
